    Unreferenced date July 2009 The British Empire League was formed in London in 1894 in order to support the ideology of British imperialism and to promote loyalty to and the unity of the British Empire . It was particularly active in the British dominion s of Australia and Canada in the early part of the twentieth century. The League focused on the celebration of the birthday of Queen Victoria 24 May as a patriotic holiday. In Australia, this was not only an observance of the holiday in schools, but was also a wider opportunity to demonstrate loyalty to Britain. Empire Day was officially adopted by the Reid government in 1905 and observed for more than 50 years. In Australia the League sponsored a monthly publication United Australia which featured on its cover Britannia and the motto One people one destiny . The British Empire Economic Conference also known as the Imperial Economic Conference or Ottawa Conference was a 1932 meeting conference of British colonies and the autonomous dominion s held to discuss the Great Depression . It was held between 21 July and 20 August in Ottawa . The conference saw the group admit the failure of the gold standard and abandon attempts to return to it. The meeting also worked to establish a zone of limited tariff s within the British Empire , but with high tariffs with the rest of the world. This was called Imperial preference or Empire Free Trade . This abandonment of open free trade led to a split in the British government. The conference was especially notable for its adoption of Keynesian economics Keynesian ideas such as lowering interest rate s, increasing the money supply , and expanding government spending .
