Brin process is a now obsolete industrial scale production process for oxygen . In this process the barium oxide reacts at 500 600 C with air to form barium peroxide which decomposes at above 800 C by releasing oxygen. 2 BaO O sub 2 sub 2 BaO sub 2 sub The reaction was discovered by Joseph Louis Gay Lussac and Louis Jacques Thenard in 1811 and Jean Baptiste Boussingault tried to use this reaction to establish a process to produce oxygen in 1852. The process worked only for a few cycles and then became inefficient. Two students of Boussingault, Quentin and Arthur Leon Brin, discovered that traces of carbon dioxide formed barium carbonate . Removing the carbon dioxide with sodium hydroxide solved this problem. In 1884 they opened a factory producing oxygen by their improved process. One major application of the oxygen was the use for limelight . The Gubru are a fictional Extraterrestrial life in popular culture extraterrestrial race in David Brin David Brin s Uplift Universe series. Their full name is Gubru ab Gooksyu ul Kwackoo ul Okukoo. General information The Gubru are an avian race. Most Gubru are neuter and white in color, but after consumption of certain hormone s, triads of Gubru begin a path toward gender and sexual maturity. These triads are considered royalty, with the queens a deep red color, and the princes blue and green. Two princes are required to fertilize a queen s eggs, and the queens are the top of the hierarchy. The process by which it is determined which member of the triad will become which gender is a complex one. Each has an assumed role as Suzerain of Beam and Talon, Propriety, or Cost and Caution, and in their search for a policy, the member whose ideas are most successful becomes the dominant queen. They are a fanatic race, among those who believe that military action is justified and necessary before the return of the Progenitors. They are prominent among the races in the battle over Kithrup in Startide Rising . Biography Rone is, like his ancestor, a close friend of the Ohmsford family, particularly Brin Ohmsford and her brother Jair Ohmsford . When Allanon comes to Shady Vale seeking Brin s help against the Mord Wraiths , Rone argues against it, but when Brin decides to go, Rone comes along as her protector. After multiple clashes with Allanon, the Druid imbues the Shannara artifacts The Sword of Leah Sword of Leah with magic. Rone, of the race of Man, is probably able to use magic because his ancestor Mareth did so. Rone quickly grows addicted to the magic s power, but continues to serve as Brin s protector and close friend. During a foolish attempt to aid Allanon in battle against a vicious Shannara creatures Jachyra Jachyra , Rone is injured and loses the Sword of Leah. After recovering, he and Brin reclaim it with the help of Shannara Druids Cogline Cogline , and then set out to finish what they started. Rone did battle with the Mord Wraiths at Graymark and survived to return home. According to the Brooks short story Indomitable he and Brin married. This would also make him an ancestor of Walker Boh , though this story line is never explored. Whatever else happened, his bloodline would continue and yield another great champion of the Four Lands Morgan Leah .
