    Oakhill Brewery was a brewery in Oakhill , Somerset , England , that was founded in 1761 by John Billingsley agriculturist John Billingsley . The Original Oakhill Brewery In its heyday it was a major producer most famous for Oakhill Invalid Stout . In 1904, due to its large volumes of production between 2,000 and 2,500 barrels per week , the brewery even constructed its own railway to take barrels of Oakhill Invalid Stout to the Somerset & Dorset Railway in nearby Binegar . Until the railway s construction, the brewery had used a Wallis & Stevens traction engine to deliver their barrels to the station.     Higsons is a Liverpool brewery founded in 1780, closed in the 1990s, and reopened in 2005. The beginning Higsons Brewery was originally formed in 1780 at 64 Dale Street, Liverpool . The company brewed beer at this site until 1914 when it moved to the Windsor Brewery in Upper Parliament Street. Expansion through the 20 s In 1918 the brewery was bought out by J. Sykes & Company . The company began to expand further, acquiring several public houses in the Wirral Peninsula Wirral area and the Spraggs Brewery in 1919. In 1923 the company bought out Walker Cains Brewery in Liverpool s Stanhope Street. There was one last push for expansion in 1927, when the firm acquired Joseph Jones & Co. in Knotty Ash . A further 70 public houses were also taken over as a result. The later years In 1962 Higsons purchased a new head office in North Street, Liverpool. The brewery merged with James Mellor & Sons in 1974. The Bents Brewery , which was next to their head office in North Street, was sold to them by Bass Brewery in 1978. Boddingtons of Manchester took over Higsons in 1985, deciding to abandon brewing in favour of running a chain of pubs. The Boddington breweries were sold to Whitbread in 1990 who finally closed the Higsons Stanhope brewery site shortly thereafter. In 2005, the independently owned Mayflower Brewery in Wigan originally run by a former Higson s Brewing Chemist was commissioned to recreate the original Higsons Bitter in a series of test brews. Unfortunately after a short run the brew was once again discontinued. The future of Higsons The Recipe has been taken up by the Liverpool Organic Brewery and after a few test casks is being unveiled at the Liverpool Beer Festival on 24th 26th February. In 1936 Dutton s Blackburn Brewery Ltd purchased Kirkstall Brewery Co Ltd. and its subsidiaries, Albion Brewery Leeds Ltd and Willow Brewery Co. Ltd. In 1938 the Company was renamed Dutton s Lancashire & Yorkshire Brewery Corporation Ltd. Duttons in turn was bought by Whitbread in 1957. Kirkstall Brewery was re equipped, and the production of bitter beer bitter and mild ale mild went up to quarter of a million barrels a year. The brewery was closed in 1983, bringing to an end a 150 year tradition of brewing in the Kirkstall Valley. Kirkstall Brewery stood empty and unused for several years until it was given a new lease of life in the late 1990s with an ambitious project to create Kirkstall Brewery Student Village. This project was undertaken by Leeds Metropolitan University . The development provides accommodation for over 1,000 students.     Ruddles Brewery is a former English beer English brewery . The brand is now owned by Greene King who still brews beers under the Ruddles name in Suffolk though the current recipes are not those used at the original brewery. The company lost its independence in 1986 and passed through the ownership of Watneys and then Grolsch Brewery Grolsch before Morland Brewery Morland & Co took over Ruddles Brewery in 1997. Morlands moved production to Abingdon, Oxfordshire Abingdon only for that site to be closed by Greene King in 2000. The local Langham well water was said to give the beer a unique character and quality which enhanced the brewery s reputation. The difficulty in reproducing elsewhere the taste of the beers has led to the premier beer being jocularly referred to as Ruddles Counterfeit. Rutland bitter is one of only three UK beers to have achieved British Protected designation of origin Protected Geographical Indication status this followed an application by Ruddles . Since Greene King closed the Langham brewery, they can not take advantage of the registration. Brief Details Holden s is a brewpub producing cask ale . It has 22 Tied house tied houses , and is the newest regional brewery . It was formed when Edwin Holden took over the Park Inn built in 1892 on George Street in Woodsetton.
