  1. Brehon's Chair

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Image Brehon s chair.jpg thumb 200px right Brehon s Chair Brehon s Chair also known as Taylors Grange is a sacred megalithic site in Rathfarnham , County Dublin , Republic of Ireland Ireland in the grounds of Danesmoate House . It is a national heritage site. The Grange Road is named after it. The Brehon Laws were statutes that governed everyday life and politics in Ireland until the Normans Norman invasion of 1171 the word Brehon is an Anglicisation of breitheamh earlier brithem , the Irish language Irish word for a judge . The laws were written in the Old Irish period ca. 600 900 AD and probably reflect the traditional laws of pre Christian Ireland. These secular laws existed in parallel with, and sometimes in conflict with, Canon law Catholic Church Canon law throughout the early Christian period. The monument comprises three 8.5 meter granite stones in the shape of a chair. The Brehon s Chair is believed to have been the seat of Judgement of the Arch druid . When the settlement around the chair was excavated, flint tools were among the artefacts found there. This stone passage tomb is often misunderstood to have been a chair, as is often told in local history. However, excavations have found it to have been a passage tomb similar to that of Newgrange found in Boyne Valley. The two side stones were a basic door frame with the rear stone being the door or portal stone. These remaining features of the tomb entrance now give the impression of a large seat. coord 53.267832 N 6.264777 W type landmark region IE display title Category Rathfarnham Dublin geo stub ...   more details

Illegitimate sons, but not daughters, were included in the division. The Normans gave this Irish inheritance law the name Gavelkind due to its apparent similarity to Saxon Gavelkind inheritance in Kent . The eldest chose first, followed by the second and so on until the youngest received the remaining land. In 1703 in Ireland 1703 , in the reign of Anne of Great Britain Queen Anne , a law was enacted List of Acts of the Parliament of Ireland, 1701 to 1800 2 Anne 1703 2 Anne c6 Ir , which is commonly known as the Popery Act Gavelkind Act . ref name AL Andrew Lyall Land Law in Ireland ISBN 1 85800 199 4 ref The aim was to ensure that, when a Catholic died, his estate was divided equally among his sons, unless the eldest son converted to the Protestant faith whereby he could inherit all the land. Location Grange Road continues for nearly a mile to skirt the boundary wall of Marlay Park as far as the crossroads at Taylors Grange beyond which it terminates at a group of farmhouses where there was formerly an old passage leading to Stackstown . On the right the road to Kilmashogue passes the entrance to Danesmoate where there is the valley of the Little Dargle River , a tributary of the River Dodder which rises near the Ticknock rifle range.
