The story was published for the first time in 1947 in a literature magazine called Das Karussell . Plot Shortly after World War II in Germany, an older woman wakes up in the dark of the night and catches her husband who is cutting himself a slice of rationed bread. They don t talk about what happened and a perplexed conversation takes place. While they are trying to sleep, she hears her husband chewing the slice of bread secretly. The next evening she prepares dinner and gives him an extra slice of her ration of bread under the pretext that in the evening she can t take the bread all that well. 1. Twist bread

orphan date July 2010 Image Stockbrot.jpg thumb Twist bread baking over an open fire Twist bread , stick bread , or campfire bread is a type of bread in which the dough has been rolled into a long sausage shape, twisted over the end of a stick, and baked over an open fire . The dough is an ordinary bread dough, usually with yeast as a leavening agent but baking powder may also be used. The ideal stick is fairly straight and made of hardwood that will not impart a disagreeable taste for example, Birch trees birch or a nut tree. The length depends on one s comfort and the fire s size. The thickness of the bread holding end is around 1.5 2  cm. The thicker the stick, the heavier it is and thus the harder it is to hold. However, a branch that is too thin will bend under its own weight if it is freshly cut. The bark should be whittled from the branch 15 20  cm in from the end, where the dough will be wrapped. The bonfire should be gradually burned so far down that there are only glowing pieces of wood left, with almost no flames. The most suitable types of firewood are from hardwood trees similar to beech and oak , but other hardwoods can be used, except for poplar and aspen , which create a sour smoke . Pinophyta Conifers , especially fir , are unsuitable because they do not create many glowing embers, and moreover pop and spark so that cooking over such a fire can become an unpleasant and messy affair. The fire must burn down a little, so that there are not many flames, and the embers can be spread out a little so that there is enough room for the twist breads. When the fire is ready, the dough is rolled out into a long sausage , just thick enough that the stick can bear ... regularly so that the bread is baked evenly. 1. Afghan bread

Image Afghan bread.jpg right thumb Afghan bread Afghan bread , or Nan e Afghani Persian language Persian , is the national bread of Afghanistan . ref http www.mansfieldct.org schools mms reads OSOR06 1 Design Breadwinner 20HTML 20Pages recipes.htm ref The bread is oval or rectangular and baked in a tandoor , a cylindrical oven which is the primary cooking equipment of the sub continental region. The Afghan version of the tandoor sits above ground and is made of bricks, which are heated to cook the bread. The bread, also known as nan , is shaped and then stuck to the interior wall of the oven to bake. Black cumin or caraway seeds are often sprinkled on the bread, as much for decoration as for taste, and lengthwise lines are scored in the dough to add texture to the bread. Afghan bread is commonly stocked at Middle Eastern grocery stores in western countries. In Afghanistan the baker still cooks the bread the traditional way by spreading the dough around the tandoor, so that it quickly puffs up and starts to colour and emit a fresh bread smell that draws the early morning throngs of people. The baker then uses two long iron tongs to pull the bread from the tandoor wall. Afghans carry the bread in cloth bags, unlike western breads which are packaged in plastic. Similar to that in Arab countries, bread is served with most meals and is generally torn into shreds and used by those eating to envelope foods, so that they can be picked up and conveyed to the mouth, in a manner similar to a sandwich , and also to soak up liquids on the plate. Since people in Afghanistan normally use their hands to eat, the bread thus acts as both a fork and a spoon . The bread has no firm ... bread. It has a dense and rich taste.
