The Brattleboro rat is a strain of laboratory rat descended from a litter born in West Brattleboro , Vermont in 1961 without the ability to produce the hormone vasopressin , which helps control kidney function. The rats lack of vasopressin was the result of a naturally occurring genetic mutation . The rats were being raised for laboratory use by Dr. Henry Schroeder and technician Tim Vinton, who noticed that the litter of 17 drank and urinated excessively. The researchers determined that the rats failed to produce vasopressin, an antidiuretic hormone, and they gave the rats to Dartmouth Medical School DMS . Researchers there determined that the rats had a mutation in the gene that regulates the production of vasopressin. The DMS researchers bred the rats for distribution to scientists around the world to use in testing the possible role of vasopressin in any given biological function. The Brattleboro rat was an early and naturally occurring precursor of the knockout rat . It has approximately 1000 students and is easily accessible from exit 1 off of Interstate 91 I 91 . History Facing increasing enrollment in the late 1940s the town moved to establish a new high school to serve area towns that would be equipped with modern facilities and safety features as well as plenty of space for sport related activities, something desperately unavailable at the then downtown location. In the early 1950s the decision was made to build the new high school on the Old Fairgrounds in the southern section of town. The school officially opened for the 1956 school year. Over the years a number of additions were built to deal with increasing enrollment. In the 1960s a middle junior high school was added to the campus and in the early 1990s a Career Center was added for technical education. These additions, while accommodating, created a hodgepodge of buildings and eventually led to structural and health problems. The decision was made in the early 2000s to renovate the high school.
