Gregory of Tours legendary account associated him with a Nathaniel, friend of Philip the Apostle , that he was present at the Last Supper , and read a lesson there. It also states that he was present at the martyrdom of Saint Stephen , and that Saint Peter sent him to Gaul as a missionary. He is known to have been consecrated bishop by Germain of Paris . He is also known to have taken part in the Council of Paris in 573. 1. Council of Bourges

The Council of Bourges was a Catholic church Catholic Synod Councils council convened in November 1225 ref A previous Council of Bourges 1031 had affirmed clerical celibacy , requiring married priests to put aside their wives purely provincial councils of Bourges were convened in 1276, presided over by the Papal legate, Simon de Brie , and in 1280. ref in Bourges , France it was the second largest church assembly held in the West up to that time, exceeded in the numbers of prelates that attended only by the Fourth Lateran Council . Summoned by the Papal legate cardinal legate Romanus Bonaventura , it was attended by 112 archbishops and bishops, more than 500 abbots, many deans and archdeacons, and over 100 representatives of cathedral chapters. Order of business The council was called during the Albigensian Crusade . That Crusade was organized to eliminate Catharism , which the Roman Catholic Church viewed as the most threateningly successful heresy Christianity had faced since Arianism in the fourth and fifth centuries. The first order of business was to adjudicate the claims to the County of Toulouse of Amaury VI of Montfort against the prominent Cathar Count Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse Raymond of Toulouse . Unsurprisingly, the Catholic Amaury was judged the rightful Count and, like his father, Raymond was excommunicated. The assembled churchmen authorized a tax on their annual incomes, the Albigensian tenth , to support the Crusade. Permanent reforms intended to fund the papacy in perpetuity, foundered. ref Richard Kay, The Council of Bourges, 1225 A Documentary History , in series Church, Faith and Culture in the Medieval West Aldershort, Hampshire Brookfield, Vermont ... . 1. Sulpitius I of Bourges

Sulpitius I died 591 was Bishop of Bourges . Often called Sulpitius Severus , the Severe, he is wrongly identified with Sulpicius Severus , the historian of Saint Martin of Tours . He was raised to the see in 584. He was, says Gregory of Tours , a man of high birth, one of the first senators of Gaul , of great oratorical talent, and expert in the art of poetical rhythms. The See of Bourges having become vacant with the death of Remigius , several candidates offered gifts to King Gontran to secure the assistance of his favour. But the latter rejected all these simoniacal gifts to favour the election of Sulpitius. He was elected, given holy orders, and consecrated bishop. Shortly afterwards he held a council in Auvergne province Auvergne , to adjust the dispute which had arisen between two of his suffragans, Innocentius , Bishop of Rodez , and Ursicinus , Bishop of Cahors , with regard to parishes for which they contended. The council decided that the Bishop of Cahors should retain the contested parishes, which the Bishop of Rodez had not proved that he or his predecessors had long possessed. Sulpitius assisted at a Council of M con in 585. He is a Catholic saint, his feast occurring in the Roman Martyrology on 29 January. 1. Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges

The Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges , issued by King Charles VII of France , on July 7, 1438, required a General Church Council, with authority superior to that of the pope , to be held every ten years, required election rather than appointment to ecclesiastical offices, prohibited the pope from bestowing, and profiting from, benefice s, and limited appeals to Rome. The king accepted many of the decrees of the Council of Basel without endorsing its efforts to coerce Pope Eugene IV . The Gallican church in the eyes of some declared administrative independence from the church in Rome , suppressed the payment of annates to Rome , and forbade papal intervention in the appointment of French prelates. While this did result in a loss of papal power in France , the movement of conciliarists itself was divided. In 1449 , the Council of Basel was dissolved and the Conciliarism Concilliar Movement suffered a nearly fatal blow. The popes, especially Pius II lobbied for the repeal of the Pragmatic Sanction and the French crown used promises of repeal as an inducement to the papacy to embrace policies favoring its interests. The Pragmatic Sanction eventually was superseded by agreements made between the French crown and Rome, especially the 1516 Concordat of Bologna . 1. Odo Arpin of Bourges

Odo Arpin of Bourges also Arpinus , Harpinus , or Harpin c. 1060 c. 1130 was a medieval viscount , crusade r and monk. He inherited the lordship of Dun le Po lier Dun and became viscount of Bourges between 1092 and 1095 after marrying Matilda of Sully, whose sister Alice was the daughter in law of Stephen II, Count of Blois . He may have shared the viscountcy with Matilda s father Gilo. At some point between 1097 and 1101, Odo sold his possessions in Bourges and Dun to King Philip I of France for sixty thousand shillings. This may or may not have been done to finance his crusade. He participated in the Crusade of 1101 , probably with Stephen of Blois, and travelled through Constantinople , where he swore a loyalty oath to Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus . Odo was in Jaffa in 1101, Jerusalem in 1102, and fought in the Battle of Ramla 1102 Second Battle of Ramla , where he was captured. He was not executed because of his connection to Emperor Alexius, but was instead imprisoned in Ashkelon Ascalon and later Cairo . Alexius arranged for him to be released. On his way home, Odo visited Pope Paschal II in Rome, and at the Pope s suggestion he became a monk at Cluny , which may have been necessary because had sold all his property before the crusade. He became prior of La Charit sur Loire around 1107, and added the revenues of numerous other properties to the monastery, including one in Anatolia donated by Emperor Alexius. Odo s capture was incorporated into the Crusade cycle of epic poetry, in the section known as Les Ch tifs the captives . He is the only historical figure in Les Ch tifs but he also appears in other parts of the cycle with historical crusaders such as Godfrey of Bouillon .
