The best known species is Gyrostigma rhinocerontis , the rhinoceros stomach botfly, which develops in the stomach lining of the Black Rhinoceros and White Rhinoceros of Africa, and the adult of which is the largest fly known in Africa. Two other species are known. G. conjungens was discovered in the stomach of a Kenyan Black Rhinoceros in 1901, but has not been observed since 1961. The other is G. sumatrensis , which was found in a captive Sumatran Rhinoceros in 1884 but has not been observed since. Due to the difficulty of observing these short lived flies, it is possible that there are other species corresponding to the other species of rhinoceros, but they remain undescribed. It is also possible that several species of Gyrostigma are extinct because rhinoceros populations are tiny owing to their state of endangerment. References Barraclough, David A. Bushels of Bots . His early studies were of both natural history and medicine, which he studied at the newly formed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , graduating in 1827. However, in 1838 he decided to start studying agriculture and entomology . In 1838 he began to collect and study insects for New York state. In 1854 he became the first professional entomologist of New York State Agricultural Society commissioned by the State of New York . This made him the first occupational entomologist in the United States. His vast studies of many insects helped scientists to solve some of the problems of crop damage caused by insects. Many of his notebooks are now the property of the Smithsonian Institution . Fitch also discovered the Rodent Botfly Cuterebra emasculator in 1856. He died April 8, 1879 in Salem, New York . They lay eggs on horses , caribou , donkeys , and similar animals, usually equines . The eggs are laid depending on the species of gasterophilus. There are two species Gasterophilus nasalis, and gasterophilus intestinalis. Nasalis lay eggs around the mouth, eyes, nose, and chin. Intestinalis lay eggs around the lower legs, and shoulders. The eggs hatch by licking, moisture or humidity. The gasterophilus intestinalis then travel to the mouth where larvae are hatched and travel into the intestines. The gasterophilus nasalis travel to the sinus cavities and or the brain. Gasterophilus is laid by the bot fly which looks like a bumble bee, which hovers around the ground. These can be managed and maintain a lower amount by a de worming schedule and removing the eggs with a bot comb or a grooming block. Intestinal bots in large numbers can cause gastrointestinal problems with animals. There are exceptional cases of human babies infected by these flies. ref Royce, L. A., Rossignol, P. A., M. L.
