Sorcha Boru 13 April 1900 &ndash 30 January 2006 was the assumed or studio name of Claire Everett n e Jones Stewart, a potter and ceramic sculptor. Most of her works include small items such as figurines, vases, planters and salt and pepper shakers, mostly done in the art deco style. One of her pieces includes an Alice in Wonderland chess set 1932 . Stewart was born in San Francisco, California and graduated from the Girls High School in San Francisco in 1919. She received a bachelor s degree in English from the University of California Berkeley in 1924. In 1926, she married Ellsworth R. Stewart 1897 &ndash 1971 whom she met while they were students at UC Berkeley. From about 1932 to 1939, Stewart had a studio at the Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park, California . From about 1940 to the mid 1950 s, she had a studio at 430 El Camino Real California El Camino Real in San Carlos, California with a production factory nearby in San Carlos, operated by her husband who made pieces using molds. Stewart s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art 1937 , the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 1935 , the Golden Gate International Exposition 1939 , the Syracuse, New York Syracuse New York Museum of Fine Arts, now the Everson Museum of Art 1936 and Northwestern University Museum of Art in Evanston, Illinois . Unreferenced date December 2009 The Brian Boru bagpipe was invented and patented in 1908 by Henry Starck, an instrument maker who also made standard Great Highland Bagpipe s , in London, in consultation with William O Duane. The name was chosen in honour of the Irish king Brian Boru 941 1014 , though this bagpipe is not a recreation of any pipes that were played at the time of his reign. The Brian Boru pipe is related to the Great Highland Bagpipe, but with a chanter that adds four to thirteen keys, to extend both the upper and lower ends of the scale, and optionally adds chromatic notes. His original pipes changed the drone configuration to a single tenor drone pitched one octave below the chanter , a baritone drone pitched one fifth below the tenor drone, and a bass drone pitched two octaves below the chanter, following the drone set up of the Northumbrian Half long pipes. Some later designs of these pipes reverted back to the Great Highland Bagpipe configuration of two tenor drones and one bass drone. The Brian Boru bagpipe was played for a number of years by the pipe band in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers , as well as a number of civilian pipe bands. It is still played in Ireland but has lost most of its former popularity. Bagpipe makers in both the United Kingdom and Pakistan still make the chanters. The Tub of Blood Bunch was an early New York waterfront street gang of the late 1860s. A collection of criminals made up of gang members from the various New York street gangs following the cleanup of the Fourth Ward by police shortly after the American Civil War , the Tub of Blood Bunch included members such as Skinner Meehan , Dutch Hen , Jack Cody criminal Jack Cody , Sweeney the Boy , Brian Boru criminal Brian Boru , and Hop Along Peter . Operating from a local bar, aptly named the Tub of Blood , the gang dominated the Corlears Hook section of the East River waterfront. Sweeney the Boy and Brian Boru in particular regularly robbed pedestrians for as simple reasons as a change of clothes. While the fates of the gang are unknown, Brian Boru was said by one account to have fallen asleep in a drunken stupor outside the tavern and, presumably killed by unknown assailants during the night, as he was found the following day nearly half eaten by dock rats. One of the prominent members of the gang, Hop Along Peter was often hired by gangsters as a lookout during crimes, supposedly for his near pathological hatred of police officers, randomly attacking police officers on sight, usually allowing the other gangsters to escape. A feared cop fighter of New York s East Side for almost two decades, after his disappearance in the 1880s the last of the Tub of Blood Bunch faded into obscurity.
