Unreferenced date May 2011 Henri Bordeaux 25 January 1870 in Thonon les Bains , Haute Savoie 29 March 1963 was a French writer and lawyer. Bordeaux came from a family of lawyers of Savoy . His grandfather was a magistrate and his father served on the Chamb ry bar. During his early life, he relocated between Savoy and Paris and the tensions between provincial and city life influenced his writings. In his professional life he observed closely the dissolution of numerous families and analysed the causes and consequences of these. From the age of seventeen he spent three years in Paris studying law. Then he returned to practice law in Savoy. He returned to Paris after the publication of his first book during 1894. When his father died in 1896 he returned to Savoy. The writings of Bordeaux reflect the values of traditional provincial Catholic communities. One recurring theme is loyalty. Loyalty is pervasive, and it applies to family, country and God. This theme is particularly evidenced in the novels La Peur de vivre and Les Roquevillard. Bordeaux was elected to the Acad mie fran aise on May 22, 1919. This elite group of writers, popularly known as the Immortals, are responsible for establishing and maintaining the grammar, usage and acceptance of vocabulary into standard French. File Goya MilkMaid.jpg thumb The Milkmaid of Bordeaux , 1825 27. 74cm x 68 cm The Milkmaid of Bordeaux Spanish La lechera de burdeos ref name H402 Hughes, 402 ref is an oil on canvas painting completed between 1825 27, generally attributed to the Spanish artist Francisco Goya 1746 1828 . Although the picture is held in great esteem and widely admired by critics and the public, doubt has been cast by art historians as to whether it is an actual Goya. ref Hughes, 25 ref If authentic then it is likely a portrait of either Rosario Weiss , or more likely, her mother Leocadia Goya Leocadia Weiss the artist s nurse during the last years of his life. Leocadia cared for Goya in exile in Bordeaux , where he settled to live among politically liberal friends. ref Hagen & Hagen, 95 ref Following his death, the painting was willed to his last child, Javier b. 1784 . Financial difficulties a year later forced her to sell it to Juan Bautista de Muguiro, a distant relative. Muguiro s descendants donated the work to the Museo del Prado in 1946, ref name H402 where it remains a popular exhibit at the gallery, despite doubts as to its origin. Rosario was later a painter, and it is sometimes claimed that she may have been the creator of this work. However, when compared to the relatively amateur works of hers held in the Academia de San Fernando, it is generally considered highly unlikely. ref Junquera, 21 ref See also La Leocadia Notes reflist 1 Bibliography Connell, Evan S.
