Many Voices One World , also known as the MacBride report , was a 1980 UNESCO publication written by the International Commission for the Study of Communication Problems , chaired by Republic of Ireland Irish Nobel laureate Se n MacBride . Its aim was to analyze communication problems in modern societies, particularly relating to mass media and news, consider the emergence of new technologies, and to suggest a kind of communication order New World Information and Communication Order to diminish these problems to further peace and human development. Among the problems the report identified were concentration of the media, commercialization of the media, and unequal access to information and communication. The commission called for democratization of communication and strengthening of national media to avoid dependence on external sources, among others. Subsequently, Internet based technologies considered in the work of the Commission, served as a means for furthering MacBride s visions. While the report had strong international support, it was condemned by the United States and the United Kingdom as an attack on the freedom of the press, and both countries withdrew from UNESCO in protest in 1984 and 1985, respectively and later rejoined in 2003 and 1997, respectively . Whilst in a Soviet holding camp in Katowice in 1945, Levi and de Benedetti were asked by the Soviet authorities to document the living conditions in Auschwitz. De Benedetti was on Levi s transport from Fossoli , near Modena , Italy . Both were left behind when the camp was evacuated and so their time at Auschwitz coincided exactly. De Benedetti was a medical doctor, though he only acted as a doctor in the final weeks of his time at the camp. His survival was truly amazing given that he was in his 40 s when he arrived, as normally those over the age of 30 were sent directly to the gas chambers on arrival. Much of the report describes the facilities for treating the sick. Treatments were rudimentary, medicine was in short supply and the skill of the nurses was minimal. Normal practices of hygiene were ignored. Cross contamination and infection were widespread. The hospital was only set up a few months prior to Levi s arrival there had previously been no medical treatment at all. Sick inmates worked until they collapsed, at which point they were beaten if they moved they were sent back to work and if not they were sent to the crematoria. The Novosibirsk Report , which many scholars consider one of the first signs of perestroika , was the name given in the Western world West to a classified paper for internal use only prepared under the direction of Tatyana Zaslavskaya of the Novosibirsk Institute of Economics which addressed the crisis in the agriculture of the Soviet Union . It was the theme of a closed conference in Novosibirsk in April 1983 and leaked to the Washington Post which published it in August. Although expressed in terms of Marxist theory , this paper, an outline of a proposed research project to study the social mechanisms of economic development as exemplifed in Siberia n agriculture, was sharply critical of current conditions. The conference was organized by the Sociology Department of the Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering of the Soviet Academy of Sciences to discuss the report prepared under the direction of Zaslavskaya that considered lagging of production relations with respect to production forces in the country. Mikhail Gorbachev discussed this report within the higher echelons of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Soviet Communist Party , and it is believed that this report was the basis of Gorbachev s criticism of administrative methods in the economic management at the 27th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Party Congress , which initiated perestroika .
