He was born in Montreal in 1765, the son of Pierre Panet , and studied at the Coll ge de Montr al Coll ge Saint Rapha l there. In 1786, he married his cousin Marguerite, the daughter of Louis Duni re . He set up in business as a merchant at L Assomption, Quebec L Assomption . Panet was elected to the 1st Parliament of Lower Canada for Leinster in 1792 and was reelected in 1796. His cousin, Jean Antoine Panet , was elected as the first speaker for the assembly and his brother Pierre Louis Panet Pierre Louis and father in law were also members of the legislative assembly. Panet was elected again for Leinster in 1809 the assembly was dissolved by Governor James Henry Craig in 1810 and Panet did not run for elected office again. He served as captain in the militia during the War of 1812 and was promoted to major in 1818. Panet was named justice of the peace for Montreal district in 1821 and was also named to various commissions. He died at L Assomption in 1846. His mother was a sister of the well known Franciscan Luke Wadding , and his brother Confederate Ireland Geoffrey Baron acted for the Irish Confederates in their negotiations with the continental rulers. He himself joined the Franciscan community of Clonmel, pursued his studies in philosophy at the University of Leuven in Flanders . Afterwards he proceeded to Rome , where he took up his residence in the Irish College of St. Isidore founded by his uncle, Father Wadding. Here, on the completion of his theological course, he was appointed professor and devoted himself specially to a defense of the Scotist system then generally assailed. During his stay in Rome he published numerous works on theology, philosophy and history, all listed below. About the year 1651 he left Rome, owing, it is said, to some difficulty with the Master of the Sacred Palace , and went first to a house of his Order at Schwaz in Tyrol state Tyrol , and then to Salzburg , where he was kindly received by Archbishop Guidobald. Life Born at Wolverhampton , England, Giffard was second son of Andrew Giffard of Chillington Hall , Staffordshire . His father, who married Catherine, daughter of Sir Walter Leveson, was slain in a skirmish near his own home, during the English Civil War Civil War . Because Roman Catholic education was restricted, Bonaventure was sent, with his younger brother Andrew, to Douai College to be educated. From Douai, in October 1667, he went to Paris to pursue his theological studies, and was ordained for the secular mission. Some years later, he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity at the Sorbonne . Having attracted the attention of King James II of England James II , he was appointed preacher to the court. Pope Innocent XI had entered into negotiations with James II and, as a result, four vicariates were formed, Dr. Giffard being put in charge of the Midlands. He was consecrated bishop, at Whitehall Palace , by the nuncio, Ferdinando d Adda on 22 April 1688. At this time, James had compelled the authorities of Magdalen College, Oxford to accept Bishop Parker as their president, and, on Parker s death in 1688, he had twelve Catholic fellows appointed and made Giffard president, despite the fact that the college electors had selected a Protestant, John Hough bishop John Hough .
