Chief Blackbird Wash ing guhsah ba ca. 1750 &ndash 1800 was the leader of the Omaha tribe Omaha Native Americans in the United States Native American Indian tribe who commanded the trade routes used by Spain Spanish , France French , United Kingdom British and later United States American traders until the late 18th century. He was one of the first of the Plains Indian chiefs to trade with white explorers and also believed to be the first of the Plains Indian chiefs to openly question white encroachment. Blackbird used trade as a means to prosperity for his people and as a way to ensure white explorers were aware that they were the guests. The Omaha were not warlike people, yet they were the first on the Great Plains to have mastered equestrianism around 1770 and were at one point, while Chief Blackbird was alive, the most powerful Indian tribe in the Great Plains. Chief Blackbird died during a smallpox epidemic in 1800. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition members were led to Chief Blackbird s burial site, which sits on a bluff on the west side of the Missouri River , in present day Nebraska . It is a resident breeder from coastal eastern and southeastern Mexico to Costa Rica . Its range is expanding. El Salvador was colonised in the 1950s, and eastern Guatemala in the 1960s. Prior to 1989 there was only one Costa Rican record, but it is now easily seen at least as far south as San Jos , Costa Rica San Jos , and it is expected to colonise Panama . The adult Melodious Blackbird is a medium sized icterid with a rounded tail. The male is 25.5  cm long and weighs 108  g. The slightly smaller female is 23  cm long and weighs 95  g. The adult plumage is entirely black with a bluish gloss, and the bill legs and feet are also black. The iris is brown. Females are identically plumaged to the males, but young birds are brownish black and lack iridescence. There are no subspecies.
