  1. Bit time

Unreferenced date December 2009 Bit time is a concept in computer network ing. It is defined as the time it takes for one bit to be ejected from a Network Interface Card NIC operating at some predefined standard speed, such as 10 Mbit s. The time is measured between the time the Logical Link Control logical link control layer 2 sublayer receives the instruction from the operating system until the bit actually leaves the NIC. The bit time has nothing to do with the time it takes for a bit to travel on the network medium, but has to do with the internals of the NIC. To calculate the bit time at which a NIC ejects bits, use the following bit time 1 NIC speed To calculate the bit time for a 10 Mbit s NIC, use the formula as follows bit time 1 10 10 6 10 7 100 10 9 100 nanoseconds The bit time for a 10 Mbit s NIC is 100 nanoseconds. That is, a 10 Mbit s NIC can eject 1 bit every 100 nanoseconds. Bit time is distinctively different from slot time , which is the time taken for a pulse to travel through the longest permitted length of network medium. FreeBSD Initial support for the NX bit, on x86 64 and x86 processors that support it, first appeared in FreeBSD CURRENT on June 8 ... The Linux kernel currently supports the NX bit on x86 64 CPUs and on x86 processors that implement it, such as the current 64 bit CPUs of AMD, Intel, Transmeta and VIA. The support for this feature in the 64 bit mode on x86 64 CPUs was added in 2004 by Andi Kleen , and later the same year, Ingo Molnar added support for it in 32 bit mode on 64 bit CPUs. These features have been in the stable Linux kernel since release 2.6.8 in August 2004. The availability of the NX bit on 32 bit x86 kernels, which may run on both 32 bit x86 CPUs and 64 bit x86 compatible CPUs, is significant because a 32 bit x86 kernel would not normally expect the NX bit that an AMD64 or IA 64 supplies the NX enabler patch ...   more details

Dicdef Weight on bit http www.osha.gov SLTC etools oilandgas glossary of terms glossary of terms w.html WOB , as expressed in the oil industry , is the amount of downward force exerted on the Drill bit Well drilling bits drill bit and is normally measured in thousands of pounds. Weight on bit is provided by drill collars, which are thick walled tubular pieces machined from solid bars of steel, usually plain carbon steel but sometimes of nonmagnetic nickel copper alloy or other nonmagnetic premium alloys. Gravity acts on the large mass of the collars to provide the downward force needed for the bits to efficiently break rock. To accurately control the amount of force applied to the bit, the driller carefully monitors the surface weight measured while the bit is just off the bottom of the wellbore. Next, the drillstring and the drill bit , is slowly and carefully lowered until it touches bottom. After that point, as the driller continues to lower the top of the drillstring, more and more weight is applied to the bit, and correspondingly less weight is measured as hanging at the surface. If the surface measurement shows 20,000 pounds 9080 kg less weight than with the bit off bottom, then there should be 20,000 pounds force on the bit in a vertical hole .
