    Milorganite is the trademark of a biosolids fertilizer produced by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District . The name Milorganite is a contraction of the phrase Mil waukee Orga nic Nit rog e n, and was the result of a 1925 naming contest held in National Fertilizer Magazine . The biomass from activated sludge is heat dried to 95 solids and pelletizing at the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Milwaukee , Wisconsin . Mistakenly, Milorganite 6 2 0 is referred to as a compost , which it is not. Compost are blends of thermophilic organic materials, with higher moisture, lower nitrogen and much higher application rates. Raising taxes for public health was relatively controversial in the early 1900s.     In vessel composting is an Industry industrial form of composting biodegradable waste that occurs in enclosed reactors. These generally consist of metal tanks or concrete bunkers in which air flow and temperature can be controlled, using the principles of a bioreactor . Generally the air circulation is metered in via buried tubes that allow fresh air to be injected under pressure, with the exhaust being extracted through a biofilter , with temperature and moisture conditions monitored using probes in the mass to allow maintenance of optimum aerobic decomposition conditions. This technique is generally used for municipal scale organic waste processing, including final treatment of sewage biosolids , to a safe stable state for reclamation as a soil amendment. In vessel composting can also refer to aerated static pile composting with the addition of removable covers that enclose the piles, as with the system in extensive use by farmer groups in Thailand, supported by the National Science and Technology Development Agency there. ref http www.compost.mju.ac.th eng Aerated Static Pile composting ref Offensive odor s are caused by putrefaction anaerobic decomposition of nitrogenous animal and vegetable matter gassing off as ammonia . This is controlled with a higher carbon to nitrogen ratio , or increased aeration by ventilation, and use of a coarser grade of carbon material to allow better air circulation. Prevention and capture of any gases naturally occurring volatile organic compounds during the hot aerobic composting involved is the objective of the biofilter, and as the filtering material saturates over time, it can be used in the composting process and replaced with fresh material. With headquarters and a central laboratory along the Menomonee River near downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin Milwaukee , it has two wastewater treatment plants which are located at Jones Island, Milwaukee Jones Island Coord 43 01 23.5 N 87 53 58 W in Milwaukee and at the South Shore Coord 42 53 16 N 87 50 44 W in Oak Creek, Wisconsin Oak Creek . These facilities were operated by United Water under a 10 year agreement ending March 1, 2008. Veolia Water is the current operator. The primary wastewater treatment plant at Jones Island was one of the first of its kind when the original activated sludge plant was constructed in 1925. MMSD was the first to market biosolids created through this process as a fertilizer under the name Milorganite . The 1925 plant has been designated as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers . During the past few years, sewage has been dumped into Lake Michigan either by accident or as a result of sewer overflow. By late March, 2006 the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District had accidentally dumped 800,000 gallons of sewage into Lake Michigan. The accidents occurred as workers at the Jones Island facility were testing a new computer operating system. Testing was done under the United Water contract. Rotary vacuum filter drum consists of a drum rotating in a tub of liquid to be filtered. The technique is well suited to high solids liquids that would blind or block other forms of filter. The drum is pre coated with a filter aid, typically of diatomaceous earth DE or Perlite . After pre coat has been applied, the liquid to be filtered is sent to the tub below the drum. The drum rotates through the liquid and the vacuum sucks liquid and solids onto the drum pre coat surface, the liquid portion is sucked by the vacuum through the filter media to the internal portion of the drum, and the filtrate pumped away. The solids adhere to the outside of the drum, which then passes a knife, cutting off the solids and a small portion of the filter media to reveal a fresh media surface that will enter the liquid as the drum rotates.     Wet oxidation is a form of hydrothermal treatment. It is the oxidation of dissolved or suspended components in water using oxygen as the oxidizer . It is referred to as Wet Air Oxidation WAO when air is used. The oxidation reactions occur in superheated water at a temperature above the normal boiling point of water 100 C , but below the Critical point thermodynamics critical point 374 C . The system must be maintained under pressure to avoid excessive evaporation of water. This is done to control energy consumption due to the latent heat of vaporization .
