The Austrasian Letters is a collection of diplomatic and other correspondence from the late fifth to the early seventh centuries, compiled at the court of the Franks Frankish kings of Austrasia in the seventh century. It appears that the collection was originally compiled as a primer to assist in the teaching of literature and in particular the complex Latin rhetoric of early medieval diplomatic correspondence. Importance The letters give insight into the workings of Frankish diplomacy, and life at the Austrasian court. The letters include insights into the literacy of the kings inner circle and the way diplomacy was conducted, together with snippets of information not supplied by other sources of the period. The letters are particularly useful in illuminating the complex diplomatic relations between Austrasia and the Byzantine Empire during much of the 6th century. Caution must be exercised however, not to draw too much from the letters. The collection is at heart a compilation of disparate letters and their replies are often not included. Without a prior understanding of the greater context surrounding the letters, their content may be mis interpreted. By whom date March 2011 Also as some of the letters cannot be reliably dated, there is debate surrounding the interpretation of certain letters, particularly letter number twenty. NOTOC Letters close lang la litterae clausae are a type of legal document which is a closed letter issued by a monarch or government granting a right, monopoly, title, or status to someone or some entity such as a corporation. These letters are personal in nature and were delivered folded sealed so that only the recipient can read the contents of the letter. ref name Clanchy91 Clanchy From Memory to Written Record p. 91 ref This type of letter contrasts with the better known letters patent . In this type of letter, the attached seal has a rather different function to play as it will be destroyed when the letter is opened and so shows that the letter has not been tampered with. However, in being destroyed the seal can no longer ratify the authenticity of the document. The original charter s of Edward the Confessor can be considered to be a form of letters close, as they were delivered wrapped, with the seal hanging down. This type of letter later developed into the formal business letters that we are familiar with today. It is thought that the earliest surviving example of an English Royal letters close remaining unopened dates to the reign of Henry VIII of England Henry VIII . ref name Clanchy91 In England these letters are typical of those generated by the developing state bureaucracy. Letters of horning Scots law a document ie, letters issued by civil authorities that publicly denounce a person as a rebel. The document was issued against persons who had not paid their debts. Historically, the documents would be announced by three blasts of a horn, and the documents themselves came to be known as letters of horning . A person who was denounced in these documents was described as having been put to the horn . Additional explanations br br History Originally in Scotland imprisonment for debt was enforceable only in certain cases, but a custom gradually grew up of taking the debtor s oath to pay. If the debtor broke his oath, he became liable to the discipline of the Church. The civil power, further, stepped in to aid the ecclesiastical, and denounced him as a rebel, imprisoning his person and confiscating his goods. The method declaring a person a rebel was by giving three blasts on a horn and publicly proclaiming the fact hence the expression, put to the horn. The subsequent process, the warrant directing a messenger at arms to charge the debtor to pay or perform in terms of the letters, was called letters of horning. This system of execution was simplified by the Debtors Scotland Act 1838 Personal Diligence Act of 1838 , and execution was thereafter usually by Diligence Scots law diligence see writ of execution . The granting of letters of horning, letters of horning and poinding , letters of poinding , and letters of caption all ceased to be competent following the Debtors Scotland Act 1987 ref s89 Debtors Scotland Act 1987 http opsi.gov.uk acts acts1987 pdf ukpga 19870018 en.pdf ref .
