A bibliographic record is an entry being a uniform representation and description of a specific content item in a bibliographic database or a library catalog , containing data elements required for its identification and retrieval, as well as additional supporting information, presented in a formalized bibliographic format. The additional information may support particular database functions such as search, or browse e.g. keywords , or may serve fuller presentation of the content item in the database e.g. article s abstract . 1. Bibliographic control

In library and information science , bibliographic control also known as information organization or bibliographic organization is the process by which information resources are described so that users are able to find and select that information resource. An information resource could be a book, a movie, or an image, among other things. By providing a name, title, and subject access to the description, a bibliographic record is created. This bibliographic record, which is essentially metadata , is indexed by an information retrieval tool such as a database or a search engine so that a user can find out whether or not the information resource is relevant to them. 1. Bibliographic coupling

Bibliographic coupling occurs when two works citation reference a common third work in their Bibliography bibliographies . The coupling strength is higher the more citations the two bodies have in common, and this coupling is used to extrapolate how similar the subject matter of the two works is. Bibliographic coupling is not subjectively valuable in all fields of research since it helps the researcher to find related research done in the past. A closely related notion is the co citation index , which refers to the number of times two works are cited together in subsequent literature. ref Jeppe Nicolaisen, http www.db.dk bh Core 20Concepts 20in 20LIS articles 20a z cocitation by jeppe nicolaisen.htm Co citation , in Birger Hj rland, ed., http www.db.dk bh Core 20Concepts 20in 20LIS home.htm Core Concepts in Library and Information Science ref The term bibliographic coupling was first introduced by MM Kessler in a paper published in 1963, ref Bibliographic coupling between scientific papers, American Documentation 24 1963 , pp. 123 131. ref and has been embraced in the work of the information scientist Eugene Garfield . ref See for example Multiple Independent Discovery and Creativity in Science, Current Contents , Nov. 3, 1980, pp. 5 10, reprinted in http www.garfield.library.upenn.edu essays.html Essays of an Information Scientist , vol. 4 1979 80 , pp. 660 665. ref Others have ... unrelated subject matter in the third. 1. Bliss bibliographic classification

The Bliss bibliographic classification BC is a library classification system that was created by Henry E. Bliss 1870 1955 , published in four volumes between 1940 and 1953. Although originally devised in the United States , it was more commonly adopted by United Kingdom British libraries than by American ones. A second edition of the system BC2 has been developed in Britain since 1977. Origins of the system Bliss was born in New York in 1870 and in 1891 began work in the library of the City College of New York College of the City of New York now City College of New York City College of the City University of New York . Bliss had a lifelong interest in the organization, structure and philosophy of knowledge and was very critical of the library classification systems that were available to him. He believed that because the popular Library of Congress Classification Library of Congress system had been designed for a specific library the Library of Congress it had no use as a standard system outside that library. He also greatly disliked the Dewey Decimal Classification Dewey Decimal system . Bliss wanted a classification system that would provide distinct rules yet still be adaptable to whatever kind of collection a library might have, as different libraries have different needs. His solution was the concept of alternative location, in which a particular subject could be put in more than one place, as long as the library made a specific choice and used it consistently. In 1908 Bliss reclassified 60,000 of his library s books, and in 1910 he published an article with a rough scheme of his general ideas. But as he continued to develop his system he realized that it was going to be a much ..., the Bliss Bibliographic Classification Second Edition or BC2. This retains only the broad outlines ... .
