The words bevel and chamfer overlap in usage in general usage they are often interchanged, while in technical usage they may sometimes be differentiated as shown in the image at right. Applications Cutting tools Most cutting tools have a beveled edge which is apparent when one examines the grind . Bevel angles can be duplicated using a sliding T bevel . Graphic design Typographic bevels are shading and artificial shadows that emulate the appearance of a Three dimensional space 3 dimensional letter. The bevel is a relatively common effect in graphic editors such as Adobe Photoshop Photoshop . As such, it is in widespread use in mainstream logos and other design elements. Glass and mirrors Beveled edges are a common aesthetic nicety added to window panes and mirrors. Orphan date October 2010 Unreferenced date August 2009 The primary grind is where a knife first begins to narrow into a cutting edge from the thickness of the main stock of the blade . The cross sectional shape of the blade of a knife or sword is made up of different planes, or grinds. The sharp, cutting edge of the blade is often further ground at a secondary, or edge , bevel. This allows the blade to have more functions than otherwise possible with a strictly wedge or chisel shape. The Swiss Army Knife is an example of a knife with a primary bevel and an edge bevel. By contrast, a blade composed of a single flat grind from stock thickness to the cutting edge is known as a full flat ground blade. The cutting properties of a blade are determined by the type of metal, the hardness of the blade, and the grinding pattern e.g. convex, concave, teardrop . A splice joint is a method of joining two members end to end in woodworking . The splice joint is used when the material being joined is not available in the length required. It is an alternative to other joints such as the butt joint and the scarf joint . Splice joints are stronger than unreinforced butt joints and have the potential to be stronger than a scarf joint. They are more visible than a scarf joint but may be preferred when more strength is required. Splices are therefore most often used when structural elements are required in longer lengths than the available material. The most common form of the splice joint is the lap joint half lap splice, which is common in building construction , where it is used to join shorter lengths of timber into longer beams. Applications Joining structural members end to end Types of splice joints Image Woodworking joint splice.gif thumb 300px right Half Lap Splice, Bevel Lap Splice and Tabled Splice Joint There are four main types of splice joints Half lap, Bevel lap, Tabled, and Tapered finger. Half lap splice joint The half lap splice joint is the simplest form of the splice joint and is commonly used to join structural members where either great strength is not required or reinforcement, such as mechanical fastener s are to be used. The joint is cut as for a half lap. Bevel lap splice joint The bevel lap is a variation of the half lap in which the cheeks of the opposing members are cut at an angle of 5 to 10 degrees, sloping back away from the end of the member, so that some resistance to tension is introduced. This helps to prevent the members from being pulled apart. Tabled splice joint Image Wedged tabled scarf joint.jpg thumb A wedged tabled splice joint The tabled splice joint is another variation of the half lap. The cheeks are cut with interlocking surfaces so that when brought together the joint resists being pulled apart.
