  1. Berengar II of Neustria

Unreferenced date January 2007 Citations missing date August 2009 Berengar II died 896 was the Count of Bayeux and Count of Rennes Rennes and Margrave of Neustria Margrave of the Breton March from 886 until his death a decade later. Roland and his successors under Guy of Nantes were aristocrats from Maine province Maine . Berengar s kin became the first bilingual Breton and Gallo language Gallo speaking lords holding residence within Brittany Rennes and Penthi vre , rather than the Loire Valley predominant Nantes or Vannes , which nevertheless had at least one Franco Saxon conflict in Angers , as a consequence of the Breton nobility being more or less broken under the Normans Norman invasions of the 880s and as a reward for holding his ground against their attacks. Berengar may have been son of Henry of Franconia , himself perhaps a member of the Senior Capets through the Babenberg lineage. This has been suggested because 1 Berengar named his supposed daughter with the feminine form of Poppo, a name common among the Babenbergs, and 2 the main Capetian branch had traditionally held the Breton March. There have been alternatives suggested, making him Saxons Italy and Gaul Saxon . Berengar is speculated to have married the daughter of Gurvand, Duke of Brittany , by which relationship he attained the countship of Rennes. This would make him brother in law of Judicael, Duke of Brittany . He is thought to be the Berengar of Bayeux whose daughter Poppa of Bayeux Poppa was captured in a raid and married to Rollo of Normandy . 1. Berengar I of Neustria

Berengar I was a 9th century nobleman of East Francia , a son of Gebhard, Count of Lahngau , and younger brother of Udo of Neustria Udo . He and his brother were created March of Neustria Margraves of Neustria by Charles the Bald in 861. He was possibly a Conradine , a relative for sure of Adalard the Seneschal , a Girardid . Berengar was probably the namesake of Berengar II of Neustria , who was probably the son of Berengar I s successor, Henry of Franconia . With his brothers, Udo and Waldo the Abbot , he took part in the 861 revolt of Carloman of Bavaria , possible his cousin in law, against Louis the German . The revolt was crushed and the three brothers fled with their relative Adalard to the court of the West Frankish king, Charles the Bald, who granted them wardship of the march against the Vikings while the march against the Bretons was granted to Robert the Strong . Charles patronage of the family provoked the jealousy of the Rorgonids , the most powerful family local to Neustria and then controlling the ducatus Cenomannicus Maine . In 865, they allied with Saloman of Brittany and attacked the brothers. Charles, to attain peace, took the march back and gave it to Gauzfrid of Neustria Gauzfrid , a Rorgonid. A charter of 879 mentions Berengar and his brothers taking part in the foundation of the college of Gem nden . Evidently, the death of Louis the German in 876 had allowed them to return to the court of Carloman. His daughter Ota, wife of Arnulf of Carinthia Ota became wife of Arnulf of Carinthia . 1. Council of Tours

In the medieval Roman Catholic church there were several Councils of Tours , that city being an old seat of Christianity, and considered fairly centrally located in France. Athenius , Bishop of Rennes , took part in the First Council of Tours in AD 461. The last to sign the canons was Mansuetus, episcopus Brittanorum bishop of the Britons in Armorica . ref He subscribed last of the eight bishops, suggesting either that he had been recently ordained or that he was considered junior to the bishops of cities . Ralph W. Mathisen, Barbarian Bishops and the Churches in Barbaricis Gentibus During Late Antiquity Speculum 72 No. 3 July 1997 664 697 p 667 note 21. ref At the Second , in 567, it was decreed that any cleric found in bed with his wife would be excommunicated for a year and reduced to the lay state nor might monks sleep two to a bed. A Council at Tours in 755 recommended that the calendar year begin at Easter . A Council at Tours in 1055 was occasioned by controversy regarding the nature of the Eucharist . It was presided over by the papal legate Hildebrand, later Pope Gregory VII . Berengarius signed a profession of faith wherein he confessed that after consecration the bread and wine are truly the body and blood of Christ. Subsequent councils reiterated and intensified the condemnation of the Cathar s of southern France. A Council of Tours in 1163 under pope Alexander III ordering them to be deprived of their goods, which whetted northern French appetites for an Albigensian Crusade . The first uses of the expression Albigenses is said to be in connection with the council.
