    File Benedetto Diana Piet Museo Correr Venecia.jpg thumb right 250px Piet , now at the Museo Correr in Venice Benedetto Diana was a companion of Vittore Carpaccio Carpacoio and Giovanni di Niccol Mansueti Mansueti , who lived in the latter part of the 15th and early part of the 16th centuries. He was an inferior artist, and worked both in tempera and oil painting oils . He painted The Brethren distributing Alms, in San Giovanni Evangelista, Venice and he assisted Lazzaro Bastiani in painting the standards on the Piazza San Marco Piazza of San Marco . Many galleries in Venice possess paintings by him. In the Accademia Academy , besides other paintings, are the Virgin and Child, formerly in Santa Lucia at Padua , and a Transfiguration. The church of Santa Maria della Croce, Crema , has an altar piece representing the Gift of the Miraculous Girdle to St. Thomas. Benedetto was his name in religion on entering the Benedictine Order in 1595. Life Born in Brescia , he studied at the University of Padua and later became an abbot at the Benedictine monastery in Monte Cassino . He was a long time friend and supporter of his teacher, Galileo Galilei . He assisted Galileo s study of sunspot s and participated in the examination of the theories of Nicolaus Copernicus . Castelli was interested in mathematics and hydraulics . He was appointed as a mathematician to the University of Pisa , replacing Galileo, and later at the University of Rome La Sapienza . Castelli died in Rome . His students included Giovanni Alfonso Borelli and Evangelista Torricelli , the inventor of the barometer and an early proponent of the air pump . He recommended Gasparo Berti for a chair of mathematics at Sapienza. Berti was to be his successor at the university, but he died before he could take the post. Works He published Mensuration of Running Water , an important work on fluids in motion, and then his Geometrical Demonstrations of the Measure of Running Waters in which the publishing notes described him as Abbot of Cassina and Mathematician to Pope Urban VIII , once a supporter of his mentor, Galileo.     Benedetto Ferrari c. 1603 ndash 1681 was an Italian composer, particularly of opera, librettist and theorbo player. Ferrari was born in Reggio Emilia Reggio nell Emilia . He worked in Rome 1617 18 , Parma 1619 23 , and possibly in Modena at some time between 1623 and 1637. He created music and libretti in Venice and Bologna , 1637 44. Ferrari s Andromeda , with music by Francesco Manelli , was the first Venetian opera performed in a Teatro San Cassiano public theatre in 1637 . Subsequently he provided both the text and the music for two operas, both presented in Venice La maga fulminata 1638 and Il pastor regio 1640 . The 1641 Bolognese staging of the latter included, as its final duet, the text Pur ti miro, pur ti godo, which was later reused, possibly with Ferrari s music, for the final duet in the surviving manuscripts of Monteverdi s L Incoronazione di Poppea . Ferrari went to Vienna in 1651, seving the emperor Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III . Upon returning to Modena in 1653 he was appointed court choirmaster. His post was eliminated in 1662 but reinstated in 1674, after which he served until his death at Modena . Many sources recount his virtuosity as a theorbo player. None of his operatic music survives. In his satire s he assails in acrid terms the hypocrisy prevailing in Tuscany in the last years of the Medici rule. Life His family being poor, he early became a teacher, becoming a professor of belles lettres at Florence and Prato . He was already in Holy Orders. In 1681 he failed to obtain the chair of rhetoric in the University of Pisa , partly because of the jealousy of other clerics and partly because of the acrimony constantly shown by him in his words and acts. In 1685 he went to Rome and enjoyed the favour of Queen Christina of Sweden , until her death in 1689.
