  1. Bender tent

A bender tent is a simple shelter. A bender is made using flexible branches or withies , such as those of hazel or willow . These are lodged in the ground, then bent and woven together to form a strong dome shape. The dome is then covered using any tarpaulin available. These tent s can be heated during the winter using a woodburning stove , and they are easily capable of withstanding very strong winds so long as the covers are well weighed down. The origin of the bender cannot be ascribed to any particular ethnic group. The mat tents used by Tuareg people Tuareg nomad s are very similar to them, and like structures are commonplace throughout sub saharan Africa . They were used by Romani people Gypsies in Europe until very recently, and in the UK were revived for a while by the alternative society people known as New Age Travellers . 1. Tent revival

A tent revival is a gathering of Christian worship ers in a tent erected specifically for revival meeting s, healing crusade s, and church rallies. Tent revivals have had both local and national ministries. The tent revival is a development of the old camp meeting s in which religious people gathered to hear a preacher. In the continental United States, tent revivals have ranged from small, locally based tents holding perhaps a hundred to large organizations with a fleet of trucks and tents able to hold thousands. Most tent revivals in the U.S. have been held by Pentecostal or Holiness movement Holiness Christians who not only adhered to evangelicalism but believed in speaking in tongues glossolalia , healing the chronically ill, and in some cases resurrecting the dead. As radio and television began to play an increasingly important part in American culture, some preachers such as Oral Roberts , a very successful tent revivalist, made the transition to these media. 1. Truck tent

A Truck tent is a tent designed to be set up in the bed of a pickup truck . It was invented in 1990 by Roman Napieraj, founder of Napier Enterprises. ref cite web url http www.sportzbynapier.com about.html title About Napier Enterprises and Sportz by Napier publisher Sportzbynapier.com date accessdate 2011 05 23 ref For many years, campers had been constructing makeshift truck tents from conventional tents until Napieraj created his model. Truck tents provide the experience of camping outdoors with the added protection and comfort of sleeping off the ground. They are similar in look and function to roof tent and sport utility vehicle SUV tents. The obvious limitations of using a truck tent are that the campsite is limited to where the truck can go, and that one must own a truck to use one. Usage Camping with truck tents is a growing movement among less extreme campers that still enjoy the outdoors. 1. Fly (tent)

Image Tarpaulin fly tent.jpg thumb right 200px An improvised fly tent using a tarpaulin Image Dining fly tent .svg thumb right 200px Stand alone fly For other meanings, see Fly disambiguation A fly refers to the outer layer of a tent or to a piece of material which is strung up using rope as a minimalist, stand alone shelter. In basic terms, a fly is a tent without walls. Purpose made stand alone flies are also sometimes referred to as bivouacs, bivvies, tarpaulin s, or hootchies. Flies are generally used for keeping moisture such as condensation or rain or sun off people while they eat, rest or sleep. They can also be used as Tent groundsheets , but this is not recommended since it creates wear and tear which can lead to holes. A stand alone fly is a multi purpose tool and is very flexible. For example, a fly can be put up in a wide variety of shapes depending on the environment and the weather, whereas a tent usually has a pre set configuration for its structure which can be adjusted somewhat but not substantially. A fly also has the advantage of being particularly light and portable. Disadvantages of flies include that a person is still exposed to the elements such as mosquitoes and cold weather and that it can be difficult to put a fly up if there are limited natural vertical structures such as trees in the camping area. Flies, however, can be put up using poles or jury rigged, for example, using paddles . A fly is also used to create shade as in the desert. Then a traditional tent is erected under the fly. Generally they will mount to a vehicles roof rack or aftermarket roof bars. They are particularly popular in Italy and one manufacturer advertises them using photographs of their devices fitted to cars as small as the Fiat Panda . Roof tents have traditionally taken the form of a conventional ridge pole tent which can be folded into a compact package, resting on marine ply wood, and mounted on a roof rack . Beginning in 1958, more modern tent designs appeared housed in a waterproof, moulded fiberglass or carbon fibre box, and are erected and taken down more quickly using a simple crank operated cantilever arrangement or gas rams that automatically erect the tent when the latches are released. In 2003 a France French manufacturer introduced another design of simple and lightweight tents, resembling modern sprung pole types of ground tent. File Boxing Tent Gundagai Show.jpg thumb Boxing tent at the Gundagai show. Tent boxing , an amusement commonly seen at agricultural shows throughout Australia between the 1920s and the 1960s is an old Australian tradition that is barely kept alive today. Born in England, now banned in America, the outback is today the only place such an attraction can survive. Traveling boxing troupes of professional fighters would travel the mining towns and outback of the country, following fairs and carnivals, putting up big top tents and taking on all comers for cash in the ring. History Among the more famous of tent boxing troupes, are Roy Bell s, Jimmy Sharman Jimmy Sharman s and lastly, Fred Brophy s, which today is the last surviving tent boxing troupe in the world. Fred Brophy, who owns the Cracow Hotel in Cracow, Queensland , still travels with his troupe across Australia with his wife, Sandi, and son, Fred Brophy Jnr the world s only fourth generation tent boxer. Only Jimmy Sharman s troupe travelled for longer, starting his famous boxing troupe in Wagga Wagga in 1911 and touring the shows and country towns for six decades. A dangerous sport Largely unreported on, little is known about early tent boxers and events due to participants and spectators being largely illiterate. In more modern times, very few photographs exist of the movement as organisers disapprove of media involvement.
