Unreferenced date December 2009 The BeaverRiver is the historic name for an intermittent river in Oklahoma that drains most of the Oklahoma Panhandle . It is also known as the North Canadian River . Both names are in common use. By one convention the headwaters of the BeaverRiver are at the convergence of the Corrumpa, Rafael, and Cienequilla Creeks west of Grenville, New Mexico . By other conventions the name arbitrarily changes at the New Mexico Oklahoma border, or further east upstream, United States Geologic Survey USGS topographic maps mark the stream Corrumpa Creek , downstream the maps mark the stream either BeaverRiver or North Canadian River . The BeaverRiver flows from Union County, New Mexico , across the three Oklahoma Panhandle counties, Cimarron County, Oklahoma Cimarron , Texas County, Oklahoma Texas , and Beaver County, Oklahoma Beaver . At Ft. Supply in Harper County, Oklahoma , the Beaver comes to a confluence with Wolf Creek and becomes known as the North Canadian River . The antecedent of the BeaverRiver, Corrumpa Creek, has a north fork and a south fork, both of which rise on the Sierra Grande volcano southwest of the town of Des Moines, New Mexico . The BeaverRiver and its tributaries flow with water intermittently. A few short stretches, such as McNees Crossing one mile east of NM hwy 406 , have persistent flow. The remainder flows under the sand except after rain falls or snow melts. The area drained by the BeaverRiver in the high plains of northeastern New Mexico and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles receives on average less than Convert 8 in mm of rain annually. Image BeaverRiver near Lake Lila.jpg thumb The BeaverRiver near Lake Lila The BeaverRiver is a small mountain stream which flows from the Adirondack Mountains to the Black River New York Black River at Naumberg, north of Lowville village , New York Lowville in northwestern New York . The Beaver flows through parts of Hamilton County, New York Hamilton , Herkimer County, New York Herkimer , and Lewis County, New York Lewis counties. Its source is Lake Lila in Long Lake, New York Long Lake . Owing to its high Stream gradient gradient as it drops out of the mountains, the Beaver is a favorite destination for whitewater kayakers and canoeists. In September of each year, hundreds of whitewater paddlers descend on the Beaver from all parts of the United States US and eastern Canada . Also because of its high gradient, there are several hydropower projects along the Beaver s course. These projects, created between 1905 and 1920 have fostered a series of highly productive fisheries in the reservoir chain.
