Based on a three day visit to Mount Athos , in it Micus tries to capture his experiences with the Eastern Orthodox Church Greek Orthodox liturgy he experienced in the monasteries there, framing it with pieces that evoke his emotions at going to and leaving the isolated peninsula. Between them he recreates the liturgy liturgical experience of the services during his stay, in six alternating pieces of night and day. As in his other works, Micus uses a combination of traditional instruments from various cultures to capture the feel of the monastery. These include the sattar instrument sattar a bowed 10 string instrument used by the Uyghur people Uyghur , the shakuhachi a Japan ese bamboo flute , the suling a reed flute from Bali , the ney a Middle East ern flute , and even 22 flowerpots, filled with water, which he plays with his hands and with mallets. These instruments are only used in the pieces representing the days on Mount Athos. To emulate the Greek Orthodox tradition of not using musical instruments in their services, his pieces devoted to the nights are performed by a 22 man choir singing prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary Virgin Mary . File Mount Athos map red.png thumb The Athos peninsula, site of Acanthus Ierissos Modern Greek or Acanthus Greek language Greek , also Erisso was an ancient Greek city on the Mount AthosAthos peninsula . It was located on the north east side of Akti, on the most eastern peninsula of Chalcidice . Strabo and Ptolemy erroneously place Acanthus on the Singitic gulf , but there can be no doubt that the town was on the Strymonic gulf , as is stated by Herodotus and other authorities the error may have perhaps arisen from the territory of Acanthus having stretched as far as the Singitic gulf. The name of the ancient city derived from the acanthus genus acanthus bush is due to the thorny nature of the area or to the thorny nature of the town s foundation. The settlers sent an explorer each to see what had happened and, as they approached the city and realized it was empty, ran to be the first to take over the land for their fellow countrymen. File Onuphrius, Macarius of Egypt, and Peter of Athos.jpg thumb Onuphrius , Macarius of Egypt , and Peter of Athos Saint Peter of Mount Athos is reputed to have been the first hermit to settle upon the Holy Mountain circa the 8th century. Peter is known to history primarily through unattributable legend . It is recorded that Peter was once a soldier who, through the miraculous aid of St. Simeon the Righteous , was freed from a Muslim military prison . From prison St. Peter traveled to Rome to fulfill a promise to Trinity God that he would take the monastic habit . It is held that Peter received his habit from the Pope himself who also formed the saint in Monasticism monastic discipline . Receiving a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary Blessed Virgin and Theotokos Mary, Peter travelled to Mt. Athos and there lived for some fifty years.
