  1. Tobias (bass guitar company)

Tobias is a brand of bass guitar originally made by luthier Michael Tobias starting in the 1970s and later bought out by Gibson Guitar Corporation . The basses are of neck through construction, a style of neck body assembly where the neck of the instrument is a single piece of wood that extends through the body and had the sides of the bass glued to it rather than being bolted on. Tobias basses also were among the first to feature an asymmetrical neck, a design where the neck is thinner on the lower side than the upper. ref http www.gibson.com products tobias aboutus.html Tobias Basses The Classics ref Tobias Guitars was established in Orlando, Florida in April 1977. The first serial number was 0178, instead of the usual 0001, as a reference to the month the first bass was completed, January 1978. ref http www.mtdbass.com pages company.html ref In 1990 Gibson Guitar Corporation purchased Tobias and moved production to Nashville. The first Tobias bass under Gibson ownership bore the serial number 1094. Michael Tobias left the company in 1992 to found Michael Tobias Design which produces a line of hand made basses similar in spirit to the older Tobias basses. 1. Shergold Marathon

The Shergold Marathon was a range of guitars and basses produced by the Shergold Woodcrafts Ltd. company. These divide down into 4, 6 and 8 string basses. The Marathon bass The Marathon bass came as a medium scale 4 string model at 34 scale and 30 for the six stringers. The bass range divides down into two main types of bass. Mark I basses, the earliest form of the Marathon. These typically feature stereo wiring and circuitry, with a humbucker pick up and for earlier models a toggle switch, allowing the user to change between modes of pick up. Image Shergoldmarathonmk1.jpg thumb Shergold Marathon mk.1 4 String Bass Guitar The Mark Ia Marathon has much the same features as the Mark I, however the stereo connection port favoured in the Mark I has been replaced by a dual mono output, allowing the user to bi amp the bass if needed. It also solved the problem of low output, a problem often found in the stereo Mark I models. In the image there is a Marathon Mark 1 4 String Bass Guitar. It has the stereo switch clearly visible on the left hand side of the control area, and the shergold peel effect is evident. The model shown has a single stereo output, indicating that it is a Mark 1, not a Mark 1a. A small number of Mark II basses were also produced before full scale production was closed down in 1982. These typically featured a rosewood bolt on neck and mahogany body and a single mono 16 pole pick up. The 8 and 6 string models These were specialist order models and only 100 or so 6 string basses were ever made, and even less for the 8 string model. The 8 string model featured four pairs of strings over the standard width bass neck. The 6 string model had a 5mm addition to the width of the neck to accommodate the strings, and a brass nut. Marathon basses produced after 1992 After the closure of the Shergold company in 1992 some basses were produced by individual luthiers using ... these basses are also classified as official Marathon basses.
