The church was built in the early 18th century, after the 1693 Sicily earthquake earthquake of 1693 that had destroyed most of the city. Architecture The design of the church is attributed to Angelo Italia , who changed the orientation of the previous edifice destroyed by the earthquake, in order to have it facing the new via Uzeda current Etnea Street according to the rebuilding plan of the city. The fa ade, designed by Stefano Ittar , is one of the most notable examples of Sicilian Baroque in Catania. It has two orders, the first of which featuring six stone columns, surmounted by a balaustrade. The second order has a large central window, with, at the sides, four large statues of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Agatha and St. Apollonia. Over the second floor is a central element housing the bells. The church is accessed through a large staircase on which, delimiting the parvise , is a wrought iron parapet. History The church was built in response to an alleged miracle associated with a local votive image of the The Madonna Madonna , painted by Lelio Orsi , which had occurred in the year 1596. The place soon became the goal of pilgrimages and, thanks to the offerings of the faithful, it was possible to build a new temple into which the votive fresco was moved. The cornerstone was laid on June 6, 1597 by the bishop Claudio Rangone, in the presence of Duke Alfonso II d Este and Duchess Margherita Gonzaga d Este Margherita Gonzaga . Part of the former convent and church were demolished in order to make way for the new structure. He studied at Bologna , Padua , Florence and Rome , and by his learning attracted the patronage of Alexander Farnese, who, as Pope Paul III , made him archbishop of Benevento and later nuncio to Venice, where he fathered an illegitimate child. After the death of his papal patron, he resigned curial office and withdrew to Venice and to the nearby Abbey of Nervesa, where he sought to emulate Petrarch and Boccaccio in a literary career. It was believed that his openly licentious poem, Capitoli del forno , his estrangement from the Medici regime in Florence, and the fact that the French court seemed to desire his elevation, prevented him from being raised to the cardinal purple for which he longed. The Basilica of Saint Clare Basilica di Santa Chiara in Italian language Italian is a church in Assisi , central Italy it is dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi , a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies , known today as the Order of Saint Clare . Construction of the church began under the direction of Filippo Campello, one of the foremost architects of the time. On 3 October 1260, Clare s remains were transferred from the chapel of San Giorgio to the Basilica of Saint Clare where they were buried in the earth under the high altar of the new church. After having remained hidden for six centuries like the remains of St. Francis and after much search had been made, Clare s tomb was found in 1850. On 23 September in that year the coffin was unearthed and opened, the flesh and clothing of the saint had been reduced to dust, but the skeleton was in a perfect state of preservation. Finally, on 29 September 1872, the saint s bones were transferred, with much pomp, by Archbishop Pecci, afterwards Pope Leo XIII , to the shrine, in the crypt of the Basilica of Saint Clare, erected to receive them, and where they may now be seen. The feast of St. Clare is celebrated throughout the Church on 11 August. The Casa Santa houses an internationally recognized collection of Santa Claus items ranging from life size, singing santas to Turkish inspired bronze plaques of Santa Claus. At present, it is probably the most extensive private collection of Santa Claus items in the world with over 3,005 santas. And unlike traditional museum s, the Casa Santa is a fun museum in that the visitors are free to inspect the items closely, or in some cases, play with it. Casa Santa started out as a small personal collection and it grew in size until it needed a house where the Santas could live. The Casa Santa was converted from a family resthouse into a museum of Santa Claus collection in 1995. History The church was built 1593 1610 to honor a miraculous icon of the Madonna. Tradition holds that the icon, when placed on the landing of a staircase of a neighboring house of a mother who prayed before it, had cured her deformed child. It rose during the Middle Ages in the place where Venice s rubble was discarded up. The island takes its name from a supposedly miraculous Madonna which was on display in its former church. In 1264 there was a home for pilgrims to the Holy Land later it was transformed into a convent. During the Napoleonic period the convent was suppressed and changed to a powder magazine, which in 1849 exploded destroying both the ex convent and the church. The island was the site of an infectious diseases hospital until the end of the twentieth century.
