The LiddellHart Centre for Military Archives LHCMA at King s College London was set up in 1964. The Centre holds the private papers of over 700 senior British defence personnel who held office since 1900. Individual collections range in size from a single file to the 1000 boxes of Captain Sir BasilLiddellHart s papers. To these are now being added research materials, notably interview transcripts, collected in connection with television documentaries and academic projects. Stuart Liddell was born in Oban and spent his early years in Inveroran, near Bridge of Orchy hence his first album title . His father Billy was an accomplished musician, as is his mother Agnes, and his grandfather was the late Pipe Major Ronnie McCallum MBE, piper to the Duke of Argyll. At the age of four the family moved to Moffat in Dumfriesshire where Stuart went to school. The family moved to Inveraray, his mother s home town, in 1983. He is one of the most recognized names in piping, and one of the top competitive solo players in the world today. Education When he entered Horace Mann High School, he was eager to study music and play the saxophone for the school band but they were out of saxes. His second choice was the trumpet , they too were out, so eventually he settled on the trombone and began to practice hard on that instrument, like his idol Tommy Dorsey . After graduating from high school in 1939, he attended the University of Notre Dame and spent three Academic term semesters at the University of Chicago studying engineering . Military Liddell entered the United States Army Army where for the next two years he was a Bugle instrument bugler and a radio operator . Liddell was Military discharge discharged from the United States Army Army in 1945.
