  1. Pierre-Jules Mêne

File PJ M ne Tachiani et Nedjeb , chevaux arabes.jpg thumb 240px Tachiani and Nedjeb , Arab Horses by Pierre Jules M ne 1851 . Pierre Jules M ne , 1810 1879 , was a France French Sculptor and animali re . He is considered the pioneer of animal sculpture in the nineteenth century. M ne produced a number of animal sculptures, mainly of domestic animals including horses , cows and bull s, sheep and goats which were in vogue during the Second French Empire Second Empire . He was one of a school of French animali res which also included Rosa Bonheur , Pierre Louis Rouillard , Antoine Louis Barye , Auguste Ca n , and Fran ois Pompon . His work was first shown in London by Ernest Gambart in 1849. M ne specialized in small bronze figures which explains why none of his works exist as public statuary. His work was a popular success with the bourgeois class and many editions of each sculpture were made, often to decorate an increasing number of private homes of the period. The quality of these works is high, comparable to Barye s. M ne also seems to have enjoyed a longer period of success and celebrity than his contemporaries. He is considered to have been the lost wax casting expert of his time, later surpassed only by Auguste Rodin . Because M ne was so prolific and because so many editions of his works were made, his work is devalued in the current market, and forgeries of his works abound. 1. Animalier

Image Eagle Jacquemart Palais Garnier.jpg thumb Eagle by Henri Alfred Jacquemart on the Palais Garnier former Paris Opera . An animalier is an artist , mainly from the 19th century, who specializes in, or is known for, skill in the realistic portrayal of animal s. Animal painter is the more general term for earlier artists. Although the work may be in any genre or format, the term is most often applied to sculptors and painters . Animalier as a collective plural noun, or animalier bronzes , is also a term in antiques for small scale sculptures of animals, of which large numbers were produced, often mass produced, in 19th century France and elsewhere. Although many earlier examples can be found, animalier sculpture became more popular, and reputable, in early 19th century Paris with the works of Antoine Louis Barye 1795 1875 for whom the term was coined, derisively, by critics in 1831. ref http www.answers.com topic animalier sculpture 1 Animalier sculpture.
