BaruchbenSamuel died April 25, 1221 , also called Baruch of Mainz to distinguish him from Baruchben Isaac , was a Talmudist and prolific payye an , who flourished in Mainz at the beginning of the thirteenth century. He was a pupil of Moses ben Solomon ha Kohen of Mainz and of Eliezer benSamuel of Metz the judicial sentences of both of whom he frequently cites. Baruch was one of the most eminent German rabbis of his time, and one of the leading signatories of the Takkanot Shum . Several of his responsa have been preserved in the German collections most of them refer to the rabbinic civil law. His Sefer ha okmah Book of Wisdom , still extant in the time of Bezalel ben Abraham Ashkenazi , but now lost, appears also to have been largely legal in character. Early writers cite also a commentary by Baruch on the treatise Nedarim , which was lost at an early date. Of Baruch s poetical activity more is known. His penitential poems and dirges, as well as his hymns for the Sabbath and for weddings, which made him one of the most popular of the payye anim, were incorporated into the German and the Polish rituals. Baruchben Isaac fl. 1200 was a Tosafist and codifier who was born at Worms, Germany Worms , but lived at Regensburg he is sometimes called after the one and sometimes after the other city. A pupil of the great Tosafist Isaac benSamuel of Dampierre , Baruch wrote Tosafot to several treatises e.g., Nashim , Nazir Talmud Nazir , Moed Shabbat , Hullin nearly all those extant on the order Zevahim are his. A. Epstein believes that the commentary on the Sifra contained in the Munich MS. No. 59 is the work of this Baruch. He is the author also of the legal compendium, Sefer ha Terumah Book of the Heave Offering, Venice, 1523 Zolkiev, 1811 , containing the ordinances concerning slaughtering, permitted and forbidden food, the Shabbat Sabbath , tefillin , etc. The book is one of the most important German codes, and was highly valued by contemporaries and successors. Joseph benBaruch was a French rabbi, a tosafist of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Gross identifies him with Joseph of Clisson . Joseph resided for some time in Paris, where he associated with Judah Sir Leon and instructed Samuel of Falaise in special subjects. In 1211 he emigrated with his brother Me r to Palestine by way of Egypt. It was probably Joseph who took to England the Hebrew translation of the Kuzari which had been made by Judah Cardinal . Judah al arizi met Joseph and his brother as heads of the new congregation of Jerusalem Ta kemoni, xlvi. . Samuelben Solomon of Falaise was a French rabbi, a tosafist of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. His French name was Sir Morel , by which he is often designated in rabbinical literature. He was a pupil of Judah Sir Leon of Paris and of Isaac ben Abraham of Sens . In 1240 he took part in the renowned controversy instigated by the baptized Jew Nicholas Donin . Eliezer benSamuel of Verona lived about the beginning of the thirteenth century was an Italian Jewish tosafist . He was a disciple of Rabbi Isaac the elder , of Dampierre , and grandfather of the philosopher and physician Hillel of Forli . He had sanctioned the second marriage of a young woman whose husband had probably, though not certainly, perished by shipwreck. But Eliezer ben Joel ha Levi refused to endorse the permission, and a protracted controversy resulted, into which other rabbis were drawn. Eliezer benSamuel is often quoted on Biblical and halakic questions. Mordecai, in speaking of Eliezer, calls him Eliezer of Verdun, though undoubtedly meaning Verona. Life He spent his youth at Barcelona , where he studied the Talmud and natural sciences, his teacher in the study of the former being Yonah Gerondi , distinguished for his piety and rabbinical scholarship. Hillel, witnessing Gerondi s sincere repentance for his behavior in the Maimonides controversy at Montpellier , himself began to study Maimonides religio philosophical works, of which he became one of the most enthusiastic admirers. He studied medicine at Montpellier, and practised successively at Rome , where he formed a friendship with the papal physician in ordinary, Maestro Isaac Gajo at Capua 1260 1271 , where, having attained fame as physician and philosopher, he lectured on philosophy, among his hearers being Abraham Abulafia and at Ferrara , where he had relatives. The wealth he had acquired in the banking business he spent liberally for charitable purposes. Himself a scholar, he extended his protection to Jewish learning. Johanan Alemanno , the teacher of Pico di Mirandola , seems to have lived for years in Jehiel s house. Jehiel was on intimate terms with Don Isaac Abravanel , with whom he carried on a correspondence. In 1472 Abravanel induced Lopo de Almeida and the physician Joao Sezira, Alfonso s ambassadors to the pope, to pay Jehiel a visit. They carried costly presents to Jehiel s wife from Abravanel, and valuable manuscripts, among which were copies of Abravanel s own works, to Jehiel. The end of Jehiel s life was embittered by the apostasy of one of his daughters.
