BaruchbenSamuel died April 25, 1221 , also called Baruch of Mainz to distinguish him from Baruchben Isaac , was a Talmudist and prolific payye an , who flourished in Mainz at the beginning of the thirteenth century. He was a pupil of Moses ben Solomon ha Kohen of Mainz and of Eliezer benSamuel of Metz the judicial sentences of both of whom he frequently cites. Baruch was one of the most eminent German rabbis of his time, and one of the leading signatories of the Takkanot Shum . Several of his responsa have been preserved in the German collections most of them refer to the rabbinic civil law. His Sefer ha okmah Book of Wisdom , still extant in the time of Bezalel ben Abraham Ashkenazi , but now lost, appears also to have been largely legal in character. Early writers cite also a commentary by Baruch on the treatise Nedarim , which was lost at an early date. Of Baruch s poetical activity more is known. His penitential poems and dirges, as well as his hymns for the Sabbath and for weddings, which made him one of the most popular of the payye anim, were incorporated into the German and the Polish rituals. Baruch displays a great command of language the seli ot , in particular, being frequently characterized by genuine poetic fervor. The following is a specimen of these poems, translated ... 55.L. G. Baruchben Isaac fl. 1200 was a Tosafist and codifier who was born at Worms, Germany Worms , but lived at Regensburg he is sometimes called after the one and sometimes after the other city. A pupil of the great Tosafist Isaac benSamuel of Dampierre , Baruch wrote Tosafot to several treatises e.g., Nashim , Nazir Talmud Nazir , Moed Shabbat , Hullin nearly all those extant on the order Zevahim are his. A. Epstein believes that the commentary on the Sifra contained in the Munich MS. No. 59 is the work of this Baruch. He is the author also of the legal compendium, Sefer ha Terumah Book of the Heave Offering, Venice, 1523 Zolkiev, 1811 , containing the ordinances concerning slaughtering, permitted and forbidden food, the Shabbat Sabbath , tefillin , etc. The book is one of the most important German codes, and was highly valued by contemporaries and successors. It is noteworthy by reason of the author s attempt to facilitate its use by presenting a synopsis of its contents, the first attempt at making a practical ritual codex in Germany. Joseph benBaruch was a French rabbi, a tosafist of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Gross identifies him with Joseph of Clisson . Joseph resided for some time in Paris, where he associated with Judah Sir Leon and instructed Samuel of Falaise in special subjects. Eras of the Halakha Joshua Boaz ben Simon Baruch died 1557 , also known as the Shiltei Giborim after a work he authored, was a prominent Talmudist who lived at Sabbioneta , and later at Savigliano . He was a descendant of an old Jud o Spanish family, and probably settled in Italy after the Spanish expulsion banishment of the Jews from Spain . When he was twenty three years old, he began to publish useful works on the Talmud , in which he displayed vast erudition. Rulings Among his rulings in halakha Jewish Law is the consent for women to wear Sheitel wigs . He argued that hairs which are not attached to the head are not subject to the prohibitions regarding Tzniut modesty which requires the Tzniut Hair covering covering of a woman s hair . He claimed that the woman s duty to make herself attractive to her husband outweighed other objections. His ruling was later included in the great code of Jewish Law known as the Shulchan Aruch . ref citeweb url http www.haaretz.com hasen pages ShArt.jhtml?itemNo 322026&contrassID 2&subContrassID 14&sbSubContrassID 0&listSrc Y title Top knot accessdate 2007 10 18 last Or first Anat date October 12, 2007 publisher Haaretz ref Works Massoret ha Shas or Massoret ha Talmud , translation trans . orphan date December 2008 Aaron Abraham benBaruch Simeon ha Levi was a Kabbalah cabalist , born in the first quarter of the sixteenth century. He published a small cabalistic work, Iggeret ha e amim Letter on the Accents , about the middle of the century, in which each accent and its specific name are explained as containing references to both the Sephirot Ten Sefirot and the Israelite people of Israel . Upon this work Shabbethai Sheftel ben Akiba Hurwitz , cabalist and physician at Prague , wrote in 1612 a voluminous commentary, Shefa al , asserting in the introduction p.  13 that R. Aaron was one of the greatest masters of the Cabala, and that his work contained the most profound secrets which he Hurwitz wished to disclose. But in reality it contains only cabalistic trifles which attempt to show that the solution of the mystery of the Ten Sefirot is indicated in the names of the accents e amim . Vienna, p. 74b the passage is badly corrupted. ref . The activity of Bonfils was many sided. A number of his decisions which earned the high esteem of his contemporaries and of posterity are to be found in the Mordecai. These passages are enumerated in Kohn s Mordecai ben Hillel , p.  137 in Ma zor Vitry, and in many other codices and compendiums. Among his numerous legal decisions one deserving mention is that pronouncing money won in play an illegal possession, and compelling the winner to return it Haggahot Mordecai, upon Sanh. pp.  722, 723 . Another important decision ordered a lighter tax on the Jewish farmer than on the merchant, for the reason that agriculture was less profitable than trade Mordecai, B. B. i. 481 . His Bible commentaries, mentioned by some of the old writers, have also disappeared. Bonfils devoted himself to restoring the correct texts of older works, especially the Masoretic Text Masorah works of the Geonim. Kehuna and Kohanim Phannias benSamuel in Hebrew Pinhas ben Shmuel circa 70 Common Era CE was the last Kohen Gadol Jewish High Priest . He did not originate from a priestly family but was the leader of revolutionary forces. He died during the destruction of Herod s Temple in 70 CE . In order to see how far their power extended, the Zealot s quote ...undertook to dispose of the high priesthood by casting lots for it, whereas, as we have said already, it was to descend by succession in a family. The pretense they made for this strange attempt was an ancient practice, while they said that of old it was determined by lot but in truth, it was no better than a dissolution of an undeniable law, and a cunning contrivance to seize upon the government, derived from those that presumed to appoint governors as they themselves pleased. Hereupon they sent for one of the pontifical tribes, which is called Eniachim, and cast lots which of it should be the high priest. By fortune the lot so fell as to demonstrate their iniquity after the plainest manner, for it fell upon one whose name was Phannias, the son of Samuel, of the village Aphtha. He was a man not only unworthy of the high priesthood, but that did not well know what the high priesthood was, such a mere rustic was he Yet did they hail this man, without his own consent, out of the country, as if they were acting a play upon the stage, and adorned him with a counterfeit thee they also put upon him the sacred garments, and upon every occasion instructed him what he was to do. Hillel benSamuel c. 1220 &ndash c. 1295 was an Italian physician, philosopher, and Talmudist . He was the grandson of the Talmudic scholar Eliezer benSamuel of Verona . Life He spent his youth at Barcelona , where he studied the Talmud and natural sciences, his teacher in the study of the former being Yonah Gerondi , distinguished for his piety and rabbinical scholarship. Hillel, witnessing Gerondi s sincere repentance for his behavior in the Maimonides controversy at Montpellier , himself began to study Maimonides religio philosophical works, of which he became one of the most enthusiastic admirers. He studied medicine at Montpellier, and practised successively at Rome , where he formed a friendship with the papal physician in ordinary, Maestro Isaac Gajo at Capua 1260 1271 , where, having attained fame as physician and philosopher, he lectured on philosophy, among his hearers being Abraham Abulafia and at Ferrara , where he had relatives. In his old age he retired to Forl . In fact, he is also named Hillel of Forl . Hearing there of Solomon Petit s appearance in Italy with anti Maimonidean designs, he immediately addressed a letter to Maestro Gajo, vividly describing the disastrous consequences of the first condemnation of Maimonides works at Montpellier, and imploring him not to join the movement against Maimonides. In order to convince his friend more fully of the absolute groundlessness of the attacks upon the master, Hillel volunteered, with a somewhat exuberant self complacency, to explain satisfactorily those passages of the Moreh which gave offense. And in order to quiet once and forever the constantly recurring dissensions, Hillel formulated a somewhat fantastic ... G demann , Gesch. ii.563. nocitations date May 2011 Jehiel of Pisa died February 10, 1492 was a philanthropist and scholar of Pisa . The wealth he had acquired in the banking business he spent liberally for charitable purposes. Himself a scholar, he extended his protection to Jewish learning. Johanan Alemanno , the teacher of Pico di Mirandola , seems to have lived for years in Jehiel s house. Jehiel was on intimate terms with Don Isaac Abravanel , with whom he carried on a correspondence. In 1472 Abravanel induced Lopo de Almeida and the physician Joao Sezira, Alfonso s ambassadors to the pope, to pay Jehiel a visit. They carried costly presents to Jehiel s wife from Abravanel, and valuable manuscripts, among which were copies of Abravanel s own works, to Jehiel. The end of Jehiel s life was embittered by the apostasy of one of his daughters. On that occasion Abravanel wrote him a letter of consolation, in which he reminded him of the saying of the Rabbis M. . 20b that the result of education is not dependent upon the merits of the parents thorns grow in every field among the ears of corn. Gedaliah ibn Ya ya relates that most of Jehiel s fortune was spent in aiding the Spanish expulsion refugees of Spain . Jehiel s death was bewailed by the poets and writers of his time, such as Eliezer Ezra of Volterra, Solomon of Camerino , and the astronomer Abba Mari alfon .
