    Archie Barnes 1931 2002 was a lecturer in Chinese language Chinese at the University of Durham from 1961 to 1984 and author of Chinese through poetry . Barnes showed early abilities in learning languages and learnt Russian, Latin, French, German, Greek, and Chinese as a schoolboy. Barnes studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and in 1951 received a first in Chinese. Barnes initially worked as a translator for Foreign Languages Press , Beijing and then from 1961 as lecturer in Chinese Language and Civilisation at Durham University. He visited China only once in 1960. He retired from ill health in 1984. In retirement, Barnes wrote Chinese through poetry , a textbook in classical Chinese poetry .     Gustave Barnes 9 May 1877 14 March 1921 was an Australia n artist and modeller. Gustave Barnes was born in Islington , Middlesex , England , the eldest son of John William Barnes, a plasterer, and his wife Ann Eliza, n e May. The family migrated to Adelaide when Gustave was a child his father establishing Barnes & Neate, a builders, palsters and modelling business. On leaving school Gustave Barnes had some training in modelling, but was also a musician at 21 years of age went to Europe to continue his study of the violin . Barnes obtained employment at the Royal Doulton Doulton pottery works as a designer, painter and modeller, and during his evenings studied at the Royal College of Art , South Kensington . In 1908 he exhibited a water colour, Suffolk Marshes , at the Royal Academy of Arts. He also played violin in Edward Elgar Sir Edward Elgar s second orchestra. His father died in 1912 and Barnes returned to Adelaide to carry on the business. Barnes did a great deal of Landscape art landscape painting , and was very interested in black and white work. In 1915 he was employed to classify and catalogue prints and drawings at the Art Gallery of South Australia and shortly afterwards was made curator of the gallery. He proved himself to be conscientious and able, and his early death on 14 March 1921 was much regretted. Barnes had married Annie May while in England in 1909 and his wife survived him with two children. He is represented by three pictures in the Adelaide gallery. Barnes excelled at the piano as a child, becoming an accompanist at her high school and later at Chicago area radio stations. She continued to pursue music into adulthood at Chicago Music College and VanderCook College of Music . Barnes became renowned for producing stage shows in Chicago nightclubs such as Rainbow Gardens, Friar s Inn , and the Rendezvous Caf , where she worked with celebrities like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers . She also produced shows at Picks Club Madrid in Milwaukee, Wisconsin . Barnes married nightclub owner Billy G. Rankin in 1925, but the marriage ended in divorce. In 1931, she married Elmer J. Baril, who died in 1953. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Barnes taught music and choreography at several colleges and high schools in Illinois and Wisconsin. She died in Wisconsin on May 29, 1996.
