Born in Li ge , Banning started his career as a journalist with the l cho du Parlement , where he became an observer of the political life, after a stay at the Royal Library as its archivist and librarian, he was appointed at the department of Foreign Affairs where he quickly became a kind of oracle in all the historical and geographical questions of his time. Out of a simple historian he became a leading actor of the great decisions in matters of Belgian domestic as well as international policy. His knowledge of the world was of great support for Leopold II of Belgium , even if the king moved away more and more from the advice of Banning. mile Banning was a leading negotiator at the time of the negotiations on the status of Congo Free State Congo of Berlin Conference Berlin in 1884 and Brussels in 1890. His political doctrines, based on high international morality and the respect of the law of nations, influenced many Belgian personalities such as Pierre Orts . He died in Brussels on 13 July 1898.     Unreferenced date December 2009 James Herman Banning 1900&ndash 1933 was an United States American aviation pioneer. In 1932, James Banning, accompanied by Thomas C. Allen, became America s first black aviator to fly coast to coast. Background Dreaming from boyhood of being a pilot, Banning eventually learned to fly from an army aviator after being repeatedly turned away from flight schools due to his race. He later became a demonstration pilot on the west coast, flying a biplane named Miss Ames he had attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa . The flight James Banning and his mechanic Thomas Allen made the historic flight using a plane supplemented with surplus parts the Flying Hobos &mdash as they were affectionately known &mdash made the 3,300 mile trip in 41 hours and 27 minutes aloft. However, the trip actually required 21 days to complete because the pilots had to raise money for the next leg of the trip each time they stopped. Death Banning was killed in a plane crash during an air show in San Diego in 1933. He was a passenger in a biplane flown by a Navy pilot, which stalled and entered an unrecoverable spin in front of hundreds of horrified spectators. Cocq was the only son of an Amsterdam pharmacist. He studied law in France but returned to Amsterdam and became captain of the militia there. In 1630 he married Maria Overlander van Purmerland , the only surviving child of Volkert Overlander , merchant, ship owner, knight, one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company Dutch East Trading Company and a few times burgemeester mayor of Amsterdam. When Volckert died, Banning Cocq inherited his properties north of Amsterdam along with the title Lord of Purmerland and Ilpendam and lord of the Ilpenstein castle of Ilpenstein . In 1632 he became commissioner of a college and sometime around 1650 he was named burgemeester mayor of Amsterdam. He was also an advisor to his brothers in law Cornelis de Graeff Cornelis and Andries de Graeff , and died around 1655. Banning Cocq s tomb chapel is located in the Oude Kerk . Banning Cocq is known today primarily for a painting commissioned from Rembrandt Rembrandt van Rijn which shows Cocq and the company of civil guards he commanded.
