It involved landing a substantial force, either British or Russian soldiers, on the flat beaches of Pomerania on the North German coast, under 100 miles from Berlin. To support this a large specialist fleet would be required. Submarines and extensive mining would, it was proposed, keep the invasion force safe from the German Navy. More than 600 special vessels would be required, including landing craft, minesweepers, destroyers, light cruisers, monitors, and some heavy shallow draft support ships. The city itself has no beaches on the Baltic, but there is one nearby at resund . The Baltic Games were held at the same time the swimming competitions, lasting for twelve days, attracted many internationally known athletes. For the occasion many of Malm s parks were renovated and a large new park, Pildammsparken , was created. The Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg designed many of the buildings constructed for the Exhibition. Although most were removed soon afterwards, a few have survived. The First World War interrupted the Exhibition when Germany and Russia entered the conflict on opposing sides. After the war Russia no longer existed, and some of the Russian art displayed in Malm remained and eventually became part of the city s own collections.
