  1. Ballistics

Other uses Ballistics Greek language gr. ba llein , throw is the science of mechanics that deals with the flight , behavior, and effects of projectile s, especially bullet s, gravity bomb s, rocket s, or the like the science or art of designing and accelerating projectiles so as to achieve a desired performance. A ballistic body is a body which is free to move, behave, and be modified in appearance, contour, or texture by ambient conditions, substances, or forces, as by the pressure of gases in a gun , by rifling in a barrel, by gravity , by temperature , or by air particles. A ballistic missile is a missile only guided during the relatively brief initial powered phase of flight, whose course is subsequently governed by the laws of classical mechanics . 1. The Ballistics

Unreferenced date January 2011 The Ballistics were a ska band from Ipswich , England . Formed in 2002, they have built up a healthy following across the UK and have garnered airplay in the United States U.S. , Germany , Argentina and Brazil . The band s first album , Go Ballistic , was released in 2003 in a limited run and sold out quickly. A first full length album, Allow Me To Demonstrate , was released in 2005. A second album, The Spirit Of Kelso Cochrane , was released late 2006. In early July 2009, The Ballistics announced they were splitting up. They played their final show on 12 September that year. History The original line up included former Red Flag 77 member, Glenn McCarthy, on vocals. He was joined by Mike Claydon ex Screaming Holocaust on bass, Steve Pipe ex Stuntchild on drums, Daz Hewitt on keyboards and Rich on guitar. This line up recorded Go Ballistic in November 2003. Rich left for Nottingham at this time, and was replaced by Martyn Peck aka Roki , ex Optimum Wound Profile , Red Flag 77, Whiteslug, Raw Noise . This marked a significant shift in the band s sound. The original streetpunk style favoured by The Ballistics was slowly replaced by a sound more reminiscent of ska punk . At this point the band started to venture further out of Ipswich for gigs, playing around the UK with bands such as The Beat band The Beat , The Selecter , The Big, The Vibrators and Adequate Seven . In January 2005 the band began recording the Allow Me To Demonstrate album. Shortly after its release they were joined by Steve Satan, a trumpet player, and guitarist in the band The Devil Rides Out. Once the bullet exits the barrel, breaking the seal, the gases are free to move past the bullet and expand in all directions. The propellant gases continue to exert force on the bullet and firearm for a short while after the bullet leaves the barrel. 1. Elevation (ballistics)

Unreferenced date December 2006 For other senses of this word, see Elevation disambiguation . In ballistics , the elevation is the angle between the Horizontal plane horizontal plane mathematics plane and the direction of the barrel firearms barrel of a gun , Mortar weapon mortar or heavy artillery . Originally, elevation was a linear measure of how high the gunners had to physically lift the muzzle firearm muzzle of a gun up from the gun carriage to hit targets at a certain distance. Pre WWI and WWI Though firearms were relatively easy to fire back then, artillery was not. Before and during World War I , the only way to effectively fire artillery was plotting points on a plane. Most artillery units seldom employed their cannons in small numbers. Instead of using pin point artillery firing they used old means of fire for effect using artillery en masse. This tactic was employed successfully by past armies. But changes have been made since past wars and in World War I, artillery was more accurate than before, although not as accurate as modern artillery guns. The tactics of artillery from previous wars were carried on, and still had similar success. Warships and battleships also carried large caliber guns that needed to be elevated to certain degrees to accurately hit targets, and they also had the similar drawbacks of land artillery. WWII and beyond As time passed on, more accurate artillery guns were made, and they came in different varieties. Small artillery pieces were used as Mortar weapon mortar s, medium sized artillery guns became tank gun s, and the largest artillery ... 1. Internal ballistics

Internal ballistics , a subfield of ballistics , is the study of a projectile s behavior from the time its propellant s igniter is initiated until it exits the gun barrel . The study of internal ballistics is important to designer s and users of firearms of all types, from small bore Olympic Games Olympic rifle s and pistol s, to high tech artillery . Priming methods The first step to firing a firearm of any sort is igniting the propellant. The earliest firearms were cannon s, which were simple closed tubes. There was a small aperture, the touchhole , drilled in the closed end of the tube, leading to the main gun powder powder charge. This hole was filled with finely ground powder, which was then ignited with a hot ember or torch . With the advent of hand held firearms, this became an undesirable way of firing a gun. Holding a burning stick while trying to pour a charge of black powder carefully down a barrel is dangerous, and trying to hold the gun with one hand while simultaneously aiming at the target and looking for the touchhole makes it very difficult to fire accurately. External priming Matchlock Main Matchlock The first attempt to make the process of firing a small arm easier was the matchlock . The matchlock incorporated a lock so called because of its resemblance to door locks of the day that was actuated by a trigger firearms trigger , originally called a tricker. The lock was a simple lever which pivoted when pulled, and lowered the Match History of the term match match down to the touchhole. The match was a slow burning Fuse explosives fuse made of plant fibers that were soaked in a solution of nitrates , charcoal , and sulfur , and dried. This slow match was ignited before the gun was needed, and it would slowly burn, keeping a hot ember at the burning end ... to complete. New cartridges with significantly new internal ballistics often bring forth new powders .... The limit to bore diameter is generally the sectional density of the projectile see external ballistics ...   more details
