Baird was born in Derry , Ireland , in 1817. His parents brought him to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , in 1821. Baird went to work for the nascent railroad industry in the 1830s. He started with an apprenticeship at the New Castle Manufacturing Company in Delaware between 1834 and 1836. He then went on to become the superintendent of the Newcastle and Frenchtown Railway N&F shops. He left the N&F to become foreman of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1838. In this position, he was co author on a patent for a spark arrestor in 1842 that has since become known as the French and Baird stack . In 1854 Baird invested in a share of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, becoming a partner. At this time, he developed but did not patent a new fire arch to improve steam locomotive combustion. The improved fire arch was subsequently patented by George S. Griggs on December 15, 1857 US patent 18883 . Upon Baldwin s death in 1866, Baird became the sole proprietor of the company, a position he held until he retired in 1873. The town of Baird, Texas , is named after Matthew Baird.     Francis Baird 1802 1864 was an engineer of Scotland Scottish ancestry in St. Petersburg , who took over his father s flourishing business manufacturing machinery, ships, and metalwork for some of the city s major structures. He was born on 16 February 1802, one of Charles Baird engineer Charles Baird s three sons, and the only one to live beyond his thirties. He joined his father s company in St. Petersburg at the age of 17 and also went to Edinburgh University . In 1823 he was elected to the Institution of Civil Engineers , one of its earliest members. He married Dorothea Halliday in 1828 and they had ten children. Some of the time he worked with his cousin William Handyside , who had a leading role in several engineering projects, and it is not entirely clear how much he helped Handyside with the specialist castings for the Alexander Column and St. Isaac s Cathedral . The cathedral work continued under Francis Baird s supervision when Handyside left Russia after Charles Baird died in 1843. At this time, Francis took over the Baird Works and the rest of his father s business. The decorative railings on the Nicholas Bridge opened 1850 were produced by Baird s while he was in charge. In 1860 the Baird Works were flourishing with between 1200 and 1500 employees, and were producing half a million Russian ruble roubles worth of goods per year. Baird was born in Warren, Ohio , and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University . He served on the Amherst faculty from 1927 1969, and was the creator of the college s highly regarded freshman composition course.     Ernest Baird 1930 September 2003 was a politician in Northern Ireland . Baird was born in County Donegal in the Irish Free State but moved with his family to Belfast at an early age. http meathpeacegroup.org events ?p 18 A pharmacist and political unionist Ireland unionist , Baird became the deputy leader of the Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party . He was elected at the Northern Ireland Assembly election, 1973 for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Assembly constituency Fermanagh and South Tyrone , and won a seat in the same constituency on the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention . When William Craig politician William Craig , the leader of Vanguard, proposed forming a coalition government with the nationalist Ireland nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party , Baird led the majority of Vanguard in leaving to form the United Ulster Unionist Movement . Baird became the leader of the new grouping, which initially pursued a policy of uniting all unionist groups to form a new party. When this proved impossible, it instead constituted itself as the United Ulster Unionist Party UUUP , again with Baird as leader. He then became a key member of the United Unionist Action Council Baird stood for the UUUP in Fermanagh and South Tyrone UK Parliament constituency Fermanagh and South Tyrone at the 1979 UK general election , but won only 17 of the vote, taking fourth position in the poll. At the Northern Ireland Assembly election, 1982 , he fared even less well, taking only 2,022 first preference votes. Some time after this poor performance, the UUUP was dissolved. Baird then confined his politics to the Orange Order , while building up his Baird s Chemists chain.
