  1. Baconian method

The Baconian method is the investigative method developed by Francis Bacon Sir Francis Bacon . The method was put forward in Bacon s book Novum Organum 1620 , or New Instrument , and was supposed to replace the methods put forward in Aristotle s Organon . Baconian Method The Baconian method consists of procedures for isolating and further investigating the form nature , or cause, of a phenomenon , including the method of agreement, method of difference, and method of concomitant variation. ref name Hesse Hesse, M. B. 1964 , Francis Bacon s Philosophy of Science , in A Critical History of Western Philosophy, ed. D. J. O Connor, New York, pp. 141 52. ref Bacon suggests that you draw up a list of all things in which the phenomenon you are trying to explain occurs, as well as a list of things in which it does not occur. Then you rank your lists according to the degree in which the phenomenon occurs in each one. Then you should be able to deduce what factors match the occurrence of the phenomenon in one list and don t occur in the other list, and also what factors change in accordance with the way the data had been ranked. Mergeto Type signature discuss Talk Type signature Merge proposal date November 2008 In computer programming , especially object oriented programming , a Method computer science method is commonly identified by its unique method signature . This usually includes the method name, and the number, types and order of its parameter s. A method signature is the smallest datatype type of a method. In the Objective C programming language, method signatures for an object are declared in the interface header file. For example, id initWithInt int value defines a method tt initWithInt tt that returns a general object an tt id tt and takes one integer argument. Objective C only requires a type in a signature to be explicit when the type is not tt id tt this signature is equivalent initWithInt int value In the Java programming language Java programming language , a method signature for an object is the method name and the number and type of its parameter s. 1. Empirical method

Unreferenced date February 2009 Empirical method is generally taken to mean the collection of data on which to base a theory or derive a conclusion in science . It is part of the scientific method , but is often mistakenly assumed to be synonymous with the Experiment experimental method . The empirical method is not sharply defined and is often contrasted with the precision of the Experiment experimental method , where data are derived from the systematic manipulation of variables in an experiment . Some of the difficulty in discussing the empirical method is from the ambiguity of the meaning of its linguist root empiric . 1. Method of support

In statistics , the method of support is a technique that is used to make inferences from datasets. According to A. W. F. Edwards , the method of support aims to make inferences about unknown parameters in terms of the relative support, or log likelihood , induced by a set of data for a particular parameter value. The technique may be used whether or not prior information is available. The method of maximum likelihood is part of the method of support, but note that the method of support also provides confidence regions that are defined in terms of their support. Notable proponents of the method of support include A. W. F. Edwards . Bibliography Edwards, A.W.F. 1972. Likelihood. 1. Bregman method

unreferenced date March 2009 Orphan date February 2009 Bregman s method is an iterative algorithm to solve certain convex optimization problems. The algorithm is a row action method accessing constraint functions one by one and the method is particularly suited for large optimization problems where constraints can be efficiently enumerated. The algorithm starts with a pair of primal and dual variables. Then, for each constraint a Bregman divergence generalized projection onto its feasible set is performed, updating both the constraint s dual variable and all primal variables for which there are non zero coefficients in the constraint functions gradient. In case the objective is strictly convex and all constraint functions are convex, the limit of this iterative projection converges to the optimal primal dual pair. The method has links to the method of multipliers and dual ascent method and multiple generalizations exist. One drawback of the method is that it is only provably convergent if the objective function is strictly convex. In case this can not be ensured, as for linear program linear programs or non strictly convex quadratic programs, additional methods such as proximal method s have been developed.
