Excalibur was released in 1993, and it has not been officially supported since 1999, when Excalibur Communications ceased operations. 1. Renegade (BBS)

Renegade is a freeware bulletin board system BBS written for IBM PC compatible computers running MS DOS that gained popularity among hobbyist BBSes in the early to mid 1990s. It was originally written by Cott Lang in Pascal programming language Pascal , based on the source code of Telegard , which was in turn based on the earlier WWIV . On April 23, 1997, after the decline of BBS popularity, Lang ceased development work on Renegade and passed it on to two Renegade BBS utility authors Patrick Spence and Gary Hall. 1. Mike's BBS

MBBS Mike s BBS was a popular Bulletin board system BBS system in the Nordic countries during the mid 1990s. It was created by a team of Oslo based enthusiasts, led by Mike Robertson programmer Mike Robertson . As many BBS systems of that era, it was only available for the DOS platform. Since one process could only handle one node, computer multitasking multitaskers such as DESQview or Microsoft Windows were necessary in order to run multi node BBSes. MBBS had to use the only viable means of interprocess communication under DOS, namely to read and write to a set of files in a common subdirectory. Since these files were accessed very often, many SysOp s moved them to a RAM disk . MBBS user interface was a command line interface where commands could be stacked . This means that instead of typing a command, being asked to supply some parameters, and then typing another command, one could type them on one command line separated by a space or semicolon. An example is code m sa g y code , which expands to marks, save message pointers, goodbye, yes . This user interface was copied in Kim Heino s later BBBS software BBBS system, to the degree that most valid MBBS command strings do the same in BBBS. MBBS was released as uncrippled shareware by Gallagher & Robertson . It is now discontinued, and its final version, 10.4, was released in 1996. Mike s BBS was also the name of the MBBS run BBS, operated by Mike Robertson, which in many ways served as a social hub of the Norwegian BBS community of the 1990s. 1. Spitfire (BBS)

SPITFIRE BBS is a DOS based Bulletin Board System written by Mike Woltz, published by his company Buffalo Creek Software of West Des Moines, Iowa. SPITFIRE was written in Turbo Pascal with Assembly Language routines. It was released in 1987 under the Shareware concept and had a moderate sized fanbase, only outnumbered by products such as RemoteAccess , TriBBS , PCBoard , Major BBS , and Wildcat BBS . It was possible to run multiple nodes of SPITFIRE under Microsoft Windows and OS 2 although, most SysOp s preferred to use Quarterdeck s DESQview for this purpose. SPITFIRE interfaced with message relaying systems such as FidoNet through 3rd party utilities such as SHILOH, a QWK networking interfacing program, and BCSUTI, a Postlink style networking interface. SPITFIRE s most successful release Version 3.2 came in 1992, just before the World Wide Web exploded on the scene. By 1994, many SysOps began converting from running BBSes to becoming Internet Service Provider s. Mr. Woltz was greatly admired by loyal SysOps, but was known for being somewhat stubborn and due to his unwillingness to add Internet connectivity to the software. SPITFIRE s usage dwindled significantly throughout the United States. It was and is still used throughout the world, particularly in countries where high speed Internet access is unavailable or banned. However, due to advances in technology, SPITFIRE can be run as a telnet BBS by using a virtual FOSSIL driver and TELNET telnet engine SIO VMODEM under OS 2 , NetFoss , NetSerial or NetModem under Microsoft Windows Windows . SPITFIRE version 3.6 was updated in 1999 for Y2K compliance. Current release is SPITFIRE 3.7 as of 1 January 2010 which is still supported by Buffalo Creek Software today. 1. MIT BBS

Image Mitbbs logo.png right thumb The current logo of mitbbs.com MIT BBS zh c p w i m ng k ng ji n l Unnamed Space is a China Chinese bulletin board system site. History The forum was started in 1997 as bbs.mit.edu at Massachusetts Institute of Technology , hence the MIT in its name. However, its history can be traced to two earlier forums the Unknown BBS at Peking University , China from 1996 1997, followed by the Space BBS at Center for Space Science at Chinese Academy of Sciences . Unlike the two precursors which were located in China, the MIT forum is much less affected by Internet censorship in mainland China , and grew in popularity among Chinese students studying abroad. In 2002, the Chinese government blocked access to the entire mit.edu domain. ref name MITBlock cite web url http tech.mit.edu V122 N58 58web.58n.html title China Blocks MIT Web Addresses ref Some have speculated that the main reason was to prevent domestic users from accessing the uncensored political discussions on this forum. Eventually, due to the popularity of the forum and bandwidth limitations, the forum was moved from the mit.edu domain to its own permanent domain at mitbbs.com. The current mitbbs owner formed UNKNOWN SPACE LLC in the state of Massachusetts on Jan 2002, in order to receive advertising profits. The name was changed from 011 86. LLC on 6 2 2003. And this organization was involuntary dissolved by Court Order or SOC on April 30 2009. ref name MITDISSOLUTION cite web url https corp.sec.state.ma.us corp corpsearch CorpSearchSummary.asp?ReadFromDB True&UpdateAllowed &FEIN 000809359 title Public status MA Corporations Division . ref In 2004, to circumvent the block in place in China, a self censored server ref name MITCN cite web url http mitbbs.cn title . ref was opened to facilitate access by users in China. 1. KOM (BBS)

KOM is a type of Bulletin board system BBS , with a text based as opposed to a menu computing menu based input system. The first was QZ KOM , but soon others imitated the user interface. The QZKOM system was first opened in 1978, which probably makes it the first Swedish developed forum service in Sweden. It was forbidden by the Swedish government late the same year, reopened with permission in 1979. Before opening of QZKOM, QZ ran the American system Forum Planet which provided similar services but only for very small user groups. Some KOMpatible systems are LysKOM MikroKOM SklaffKOM NiKom H KOM TPCS The Common Link TCL , for MS DOS EasyKOM Alpha KOM Nice Touch OpenKOM http sourceforge.net projects openkom For a list of active KOM systems today, see the article on LysKOM .
