He is particularly known for his opera in Arabic Anas el Wugood written 1960 65 which was been performed at the Cairo Opera House , 1970 ? , 1995. ElShawan first studied economics in Egypt, then studied composition with Aram Khachaturian at the Moscow Conservatory in the late 1950s and in 1967 68. His pupils included the Jordanian composer Haytham Sukareya and the Egyptian composers George Kyrillos and Ramz Sabry Samy . His daughter, Dr. Salwa ElShawan Castelo Branco, is an Ethnomusicology ethnomusicologist and teaches at the New University of Lisbon in Lisbon , Portugal .
