These African traditional masks masks , strictly performed by men, imitate the character of an adolescence adolescent girl, exaggerating the girls beauty and movements. The performance is always accompanied by Igbo music musicians who sing and play tributes to both real and spirit maidens. These masks showcase an ideal image of an Igbo maiden. This ideal is made up by the smallness of a young girl s features and the whiteness of her complexion, which is an indication that the mask is a spirit. This whiteness is created using a chalk substance used for ritually marking the body in both West Africa and the African Diaspora . The chalky substance is also used in Uli design uli design , created and exhibited on the skin of Igbo women. Most maiden spirit mask are decorated with representations of hair combs, and other objects, modeled after late 19th century ceremonial hairstyles.   1. Alvan Ikoku

    Alvan Ikoku 1900&ndash 1971 was a Nigerian educator, statesman, activist and politician. Born on August 1, 1900 in Arochukwu , present day Abia State , he was educated at Government School and Hope Waddell College, Calabar . In 1920, he received his first teaching appointment with the Presbyterianism Presbyterian Church of Scotland at Itigidi and two years later became a senior tutor at St. Paul s Teachers Training College, Awka, Anambra State . While teaching at Awka, Ikoku earned his University of London degree in Philosophy in 1928, University of London External System through its external programme . Soon after, in 1931, Ikoku established one of the earliest private secondary schools in Nigeria the Aggrey Memorial College, located in Arochukwu and named after James Aggrey James E.K. Aggrey , an eminent Ghana Ghanaian educationist. In 1946, after several constitutional changes allowing more Nigerians in the legislative chambers, he was nominated to the Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly and assigned to the ministry of education. In 1947 he became part of the Legislative Council in Lagos as one of three representatives of the Eastern Region. Ikoku fostered considerable government interest in the Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT , becoming instrumental in the Legislative Council s acceptance of 44 NUT proposals amending various educational ordinances. He encountered resistance through much of the 1950s, when the Colonial Government rejected NUT recommendations for the introduction of uniform education in Nigeria. However, Ikoku and his union were vindicated after national independence when the recommendations became the foundation of official policy on education.     Umuawulu is a town in Awka South Local Government Area LGA of Anambra State, Nigeria and its geographical coordinates are 6 9 0 North, 7 6 0 East. The estimated population of Umuawulu by 2005 is 20,150. Umuawulu was ruled by H.R.H. Eze G.C. Igboamazu, alias Eze Udo Peace King and the Igwe 1 of Umuawulu from 1977 to 2000. There are two primary schools and two secondary schools. One of the secondary schools, Holy Cross High School, is one of the oldest schools in South East Nigeria. There are 12 churches, including one Anglican and one Roman Catholic Church.Umuawulu is made up of three villages Enugu, Umuenu and Agbana, with three markets, Oye Enugwu, Oye Umuenu and Nkwo Agbana market, each in the three villages respectively. The three markets serve as collection centers for the neighboring communities because of the strategic position of the town.Umuawulu has boundaries with five towns, on the North is Isiagu, on the East is Amaetiti,on the West is Nibo and on the south,it is bounded by Awgbu and Mbaukwu, the later being the ancestral brother of Umuawulu.
