Unreferenced date April 2007 Mechanic arts is an obsolete and archaic term. In the 19th century it referred to fields of which some are now known as engineering . The mechanic s grip is a standard grip utilized primarily by magicians and card cheaters as it allows a sturdy and versatile means by which to hold the cards. Covering the deck with your hand allows you to do things you regularly would not, such as viewing the top card s face useful in poker or blackjack or lifting and selecting a card without the spectators knowledge useful in card tricks . Ethics Use of this grip often portrays the handler as a cheat or someone with above average ability at manipulating cards for this reason it is rarely used by professional dealers. A mechanic is a card sharp who uses the Mechanic s Grip or other sleight of hand tricks to cheat at cards, often to cheat other players out of their money. The fact that a dealer holds the cards in a Mechanic s Grip usually should not be the sole consideration when deciding to accuse a dealer of cheating, because many honest dealers hold the deck in this fashion. It is a widely used method of holding the deck even amongst dealers who are not card sharp s and are not cheating. Instructions Refer to the picture at right for finger placements. blockquote To form the Mechanic s Grip, first hold the deck in your hand in the same fashion you might hold a hammer or tool. The cards should be lying flat in your palm with the longer side of the deck lying along the fingers. Take your pointer finger and move it to the short side facing away from you. orphan date October 2008 Bush mechanic is an Australian slang expression which refers to somebody who out of necessity and with immediate available materials, is able to solve practical problems using sometimes untraditional and inventive techniques. Generally an inventive technique is required due to the lack of proper resources or the other constraints in solving the problem using traditional means for example, using a tree branch to fix a broken axle . Bush mechanics may also be known as bushies . Their approach to mechanics may be likened to that of television character MacGyver . It can be an entry level position, although there are a number of certifications available. Drywallers can work for a construction firm, or work privately, putting their name in the yellow pages. Health hazards Health hazards include the dangers of toxic poisoning from the fumes and dust of paints and related materials. Construction workers who sand drywall joint compound are often exposed to high concentrations of dust s, talc , calcite , mica , gypsum , and in some cases, respirable silica . http www.cdc.gov niosh hc30.html Some of these have been associated with varying degrees of eye, nose, throat, and respiratory tract irritation. Over time, breathing the dust from drywall joint compounds may cause persistent throat and airway irritation, coughing, phlegm production, and breathing difficulties similar to asthma. When silica is present, workers may also face an increased risk of silicosis and lung cancer . There are also asbestos and Mold health issues in removing old drywall, as well as lead paint on drywall first painted several decades ago. For all of these reasons, constant use of a respirator is widely recommended, and even required by some labor authorities. Potential falls from elevated work platforms or ladders are another risk. History Instrumentation has existed for hundreds of years in one form or another. The oldest manometer was invented by Evangelista Torricelli in 1643. The thermometer has been credited to many scientists of about the same period. Over that time, small and large scale industrial plants have always had use for measurements. For the most part, these were passive measuring devices. If a process needed a control, they d hire someone at a low wage to control the process manually. World War II brought about a revolution in the use of instrumentation. ref http pubs.acs.org doi pdf 10.1021 ac801205u?sessid 6006l3 ref Advanced processes requires tighter control than people could provide, and advanced instruments were required to provide measurements in modern processes. Also, the war left industry with a substantially reduced workforce. Industrial instrumentation solved both problems, leading to a rise in its use. Pipe fitters had to learn more about instrumentation and control theory, and a new trade was born. ref http books.google.ca books?id TFvKPHAA acC&pg PA1&lpg PA1&dq history of pneumatic instrumentation&source web&ots V9V8gilyi1&sig xUM39sOAVZ4ZqVwMzZ 0kd7 Vgc&hl en&sa X&oi book result&resnum 1&ct result PPA6,M1 ref Today, instrument mechanics have more to do with electricians than pipe fitters.
