    Image Avalon.brooklyn.jpg thumb The Avalon Theater as it appeared in 1976 The Avalon Theater was a now defunct theater that opened in Brooklyn, New York on January 25, 1928 and was located on Kings Highway Brooklyn Kings Highway at the northwest corner of East 18th Street in the United States of America . Originally built by a local Brooklyn company as the Piccadilly, it was sold prior to opening to Loews Cineplex Entertainment Loews Theaters , which changed the name to Avalon. Designed by Samuel Cohen, the auditoriums seated 2,119 and featured a Robert Morton Organ Company Robert Morton theatre pipe organ. Within a year of opening, it became part of the Century Theatres chain. The theater closed in 1982 and the building now houses a Rite Aid Rite Aid pharmacy , and offices on the upper floors. Built in 1938 as a 350 seat theater, the Avalon s most significant feature is its Art Deco detailing, especially the marquee, box office, and entry doors and continuing with simple Art Deco geometry motifs in the interior, all of which has survived. The building is constructed of brick with a Parabola parabolic poured concrete floor in the seating area to ensure a good view for all. The building still functions as a movie theater, with its original projectors, and also is home to local live theater groups. The Avalon Theater is historically significant as a rare example of Art Deco theaters built during the Great Depression . It is part of a vanishing genre of small town movie houses, and is the only remaining Art Deco building in Larimore.
