Alad r Aujeszky 11 January 1869 Pest, Hungary Pest 9 March 1933 Budapest was a Hungarian veterinary pathologist, professor of bacteriology and microbiologist, noted for his work on Pseudorabies . ref http www.whonamedit.com doctor.cfm 2319.html ref ref http jvdi.org cgi reprint 4 2 206.pdf ref Pseudorabies , PRV, Aujeszky s disease , infectious Progressive bulbar palsy bulbar paralysis or mad itch , is caused by a virus with icosahedral symmetry and belongs to the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae within the family Herpesviridae . This subfamily has a wide host range and attacks the peripheral nervous system of the host. It was first described in 1813 in a situation where cattle and pigs shared a stable. In 1909 Weiss found that pigs are the reservoir host of the virus, and that even though other species such as cattle, sheep, cats, dogs, goats, horses, raccoons, skunks, mice, and rats may transmit the disease, the virus completes its life cycle only in pigs. Taxobox name Varicellovirus image image caption virus group i familia Herpesviridae genus Varicellovirus Varicellovirus var i sel vi r s is a genus of Alphaherpesvirinae . The varicellovirus genus contains several closely related viruses, including Varicella zoster virus human herpesvirus 3 , the causative agent of chickenpox in humans, and Pseudorabies virus Suid herpesvirus 1 , the causative agent of Aujeszky s disease. Morphology As with other Alphaherpesvirinae Alpha herpesviruses , the virus particle has a layered structure Virions consist of an envelope , a viral tegument tegument , a nucleocapsid , and a core. viral tegument Tegument is disordered they do not display a structure and proteins in variable amounts are arranged sometimes in an asymmetric layer located between envelope and capsid. The viral capsid is contained within a spherical envelope which is 120 200  nm in diameter. Surface projections on envelope viral Receptor biochemistry receptors are densely dispersed and contain small spikes that evenly dot the surface. The capsid nucleocapsid is round and exhibits icosahedron icosahedral symmetry. The capsid is isometric and has a diameter of 100 110  nm. The capsid consists of 162 capsomer proteins with a hexagonal base and a hole running half way down the long axis. The core consists of a fibrillar spool on which the DNA is wrapped. The end of the fibers are anchored to the underside of the capsid shell ref ICTVdB The Universal Virus Database, version 4. http www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ICTVdb ICTVdB ref . It is a double stranded enveloped DNA virus Hosts The virus s natural host is a single type of vertebrate host. One member of the Varicellovirus genus, Varicella zoster virus HHV 3 infects Homo sapiens humans ref Davison, A.J. 2002 . Evolution of the herpesviruses. Vet. Microbial., 86, 69 88. ref .
