Cin ed mac Conaing died 851 was king of Brega King of Knowth in the medieval Ireland Irish province of Mide , succeeding his father Conaing mac Flainn in 849. Cin ed s family belonged to the Knowth, or U Chonaing, branch of the S l n edo Sl ine , part of the southern branch of the dominant U N ill kin group. The leadership of the southern branch rested with the rival Clann Cholm in whose chief, M el Sechnaill mac M ele Ruanaid , was High King of Ireland . Even within the S l n edo Sl ine, Cin ed and his kin had a rival in the shape of Tigernach mac F cartai , king of Lagore. In 850 Cin ed allied himself with the Viking armies in the Irish midlands. He and his allies, say the Annals of Ulster , plundered the southern U N ill from the River Shannon Shannon to the sea burning churches and settlements. This is portrayed as a rebellion against M el Sechnaill, but the target may well have been Cin ed s local rival Tigernach whose crannog in Loch Gabhair was burned, along with the nearby church at Trevet . The following year, the Irish annals record, Cin ed was treacherously executed by being drowned by M el Sechnaill and Tigernach, presumably at a conference as the annals add that this was in spite of the guarantees of the nobles of Ireland, and the successor of Saint Patrick Patrick i.e. the abbot of Armagh in particular . Cin ed was succeeded by his brother Flann mac Conaing Flann . According to saga material embedded in the Fragmentary Annals of Ireland , the Viking king Amla b Conung Amla b was married to a daughter of Cin ed, and killed his brother Auisle in an argument over her. Whether this wife existed, and if she did, whether she was the daughter of this Cin ed, or of the king of the Picts Cin ed mac Ailp n , or of some other Cin ed, is unclear. Upon the death of M el Ruanaid mac Donnchada Midi of Mide in 843, a succession dispute broke out. Whether the mention of Cathals s death in that year by the annals implies that Cathal died as part of this dispute or was the heir he would have been senior in the clan at that time and his death led to the dispute, is not mentioned. Lorc n did succeed to the throne himself in 862 possibly as senior heir. The new High King was ed Findliath died 877 of the northern U N ill kindred of the Cen l nE gain . Flann was a former ally of Dublin, and still ed s most important ally in the central part of Ireland. For the Icelandic skald known as ttarr the Black ttarr svarti For the given name ttar disambiguation ttar Ottir Iarla or Jarl ttar died 918 , also Ottir Dub or ttar the Black , and in English sources Oter comes or Count ttar , was a jarl title jarl who occupied a prominent position among the Norsemen Norse of Britain and Ireland in the early 10th century. He is believed to be the founder of the settlement, Waterford Harbour Loch d Caech present day Waterford in the year 914. From 917 to his death in 918 Ottir was a close associate of the powerful overking Ragnall ua mair , although they are not known to have been related. The Cogad G edel re Gallaib describes him raiding there alongside Ragnall and associates this with the Viking settlement of Cork city Cork . ref Todd, pp. 30 1 ref Their base for this activity was Waterford Harbour Loch d Caech or present day Waterford . Later the same epic describes Ottir conquering the eastern part of Munster from his seat at Waterford, ref Todd, pp. 38 41 ref but it is unclear if he ruled it as king outright or was in any way subject to Ragnall, because the annals offer a different chronology. Joan Radner ref Radner, p. 207 ref has suggested that Ottir is identical to the Ottir mac Iargni who is recorded in the Annals of Ulster killing a son of Auisle in alliance with Muirgel daughter of M el Sechnaill mac M ele Ruanaid in 883, ref Annals of Ulster , 882 ref but Clare Downham describes this identification as by no means certain . ref name Downham266 Downham, p. 266 ref Mary Valante in any case assumes this Ottar and Muirgel were married because he and his father Iercne died 852 were apparently allies of M el Sechnaill. ref Valante, p. 92 ref Ottir may also have been the father of Barid mac Oitir ref name Downham266 who is recorded killed in battle against Ragnall in 914, ref Annals of Ulster, 913 ref ... more details
