The Athenaeum was a literary magazine published in London from 1828 to 1921. It had a reputation for publishing the very best writers of the age. Launched in 1828 by James Silk Buckingham , it was sold within a few weeks to Frederick Denison Maurice Frederick Maurice and John Sterling author John Sterling , but they could not make it profitable. In 1829 Charles Wentworth Dilke Dilke the Elder Charles Wentworth Dilke became part proprietor and editor. He greatly extended the influence of the magazine. In 1846 he resigned the editorship, and assumed that of the Daily News London Daily News , but contributed a series of notable articles to Athenaeum . In 1846, Thomas Kibble Hervey poet and critic became Editor until his resignation due to ill health in 1853. George Darley was a staff critic in the early years, and Gerald Massey contributed many literary reviews mainly on poetry during the period 1858 1868. The Junior Athenaeum Club was a now defunct gentlemen s club formerly in Piccadilly , London. It was founded in 1864 and occupied the house once inhabited by the Henry Pelham Clinton, 6th Duke of Newcastle Duke of Newcastle , and which had been built at great cost by his father in law, the late Henry Thomas Hope . The Caracas Athenaeum has always been led by women. The current president, Mar a Teresa Castillo , has been in that position since 1958. The first president was the musician Maria Luisa Escobar . She led the Atheneum from its first headquarters, a residence property of general Vicencio P rez Soto. In 1942, there was a change of both, president and location. The presidency went to the hands of the actress Anna Julia Rojas. The new location was the place of birth of educator Andr s Bello . It would not be until 1983 that the Caracas Athenaeum would obtain its current location. This building was designed by Gustavo Legorburu, who won the National Prize of Architecture for it that same year. Only the Library Company of Philadelphia , founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin , Newport s Redwood Library and Athenaeum , founded in 1747, and the Charleston Library Society , founded in 1748, are older. The Providence Athenaeum predates the New York Society Library , founded in 1754, and the Boston Athenaeum , founded in 1807. History In 1753 a group of private citizens started The Providence Library Company to gain access to a collection of books that they could not afford individually. Members paid a small subscription fee to the library to purchase books which all members could share. Stephen Hopkins politician Stephen Hopkins , signatory of the Declaration of Independence , was a leading member of the early organization. Many of the early books had to be purchased from England . In 1758, a fire destroyed the first collection of books, which were then housed at the Providence court house. Shortly after Brown University moved to Providence in 1770, the library offered students the use of its books. In 1836 the Providence Library Company merged with the Providence Atheneum founded in 1831 , and the merged organization became known as the Providence Athenaeum. The Athenaeum is the official student newspaper at Acadia University in Wolfville , Nova Scotia . It was founded in 1874 , initially as a student literary magazine . The Athenaeum continued in its original format until the 1940s, at which point it became a more traditional newspaper.
