  1. Cardiac asthma

Infobox Disease Name Cardiac asthma Image Caption DiseasesDB ICD10 ICD10 I 50 1 i 30 ICD9 ICD9 428.1 ICDO OMIM MedlinePlus eMedicineSubj eMedicineTopic MeshID D004418 Cardiac asthma is a medical symptom, of wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath due to congestive heart failure . It is known as cardiac asthma because the symptoms may mimic asthma. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, it can be classified as a medical emergency as it is a symptom of heart failure leading to the build up of fluids in the lungs pulmonary edema and in and around your airways. Asthma is very different in this sense as true asthma is caused by the inflammation and eventual narrowing down of airways. This is what causes the breathing difficulties that is characteristic to asthma. Asthma has nothing to do with fluid in the lungs or heart disease or even heart failure which is so associated with Cardiac Asthma. The Distinction between true asthma and cardiac asthma is especially important because using treatments for true asthma including inhalers in the assumption that the child actually has Asthma may actually worsen cardiac asthma and cause severe heart rhythmic issues. updated 17 12 2011 See also Dyspnea Trepopnea Congestive heart failure References reflist Heart diseases DEFAULTSORT Cardiac Asthma Category Abnormal respiration Category Heart diseases symptom stub ar de Asthma cardiale es Disnea parox stica nocturna it Dispnea parossistica notturna hu Sz vasztma nl Astma cardiale pl Dychawica sercowa pt Dispneia parox stica noturna ru uk ...   more details

  1. Feline asthma

Feline asthma is a common allergy allergic respiratory disease in cat s, affecting at least one percent of all adult cats worldwide. It is a chronic progressive disease for which there is no cure. Common symptoms include wheezing, coughing, labored breathing and potentially life threatening bronchoconstriction . There is conjecture that the disease is becoming more common due to increased exposure to industrial pollutants. Diagnosis Owners often notice their cat coughing several times per day. Cat coughing sounds different from human coughing more like the cat is passing a hairball. Veterinarians will classify the severity of the symptoms. They will rule out other diseases including heartworm , lungworm and heart disease. Symptoms, pulmonary radiographs, and a positive response to steroids help confirm the diagnosis. Treatment Although feline asthma is incurable, ongoing treatments allow many domestic cats to live normal lives. Feline asthma is commonly managed through use of bronchodilators for mild cases, or glucocorticosteroids with bronchodilators for moderate to severe cases. 1. Asthma spacer

Image Baby inhaler.jpg thumb Baby using inhaler and spacer. An asthma spacer is an add on device used to increase the ease of administering aerosolized medication from a metered dose inhaler MDI . The spacer adds space in the form of a tube or chamber between the canister of medication and the patient s mouth, allowing the patient to inhale the medication by breathing in slowly and deeply for five to 10 breaths. Application After removing the MDI s cap, the MDI is inserted into the back piece. The front part of the chamber is closed off by either a facemask that covers both the patient s mouth and nose, or simply a mouthpiece that goes in the patient s mouth. To administer the medication, the patient brings the facemask to the face or the mouth piece to the mouth and depresses the metered dose inhaler once, resulting in the release of one dose of medication. The medication from the MDI is then briefly suspended in the spacer s chamber while the patient inhales the aerosolized medication by breathing in and out deeply at a slow rate. Some spacers are equipped with a whistle, which sounds as a warning when the patient is inhaling too quickly. The facemask on the spacer has valves which insure that the medication suspended in the chamber is inhaled by the patient, and that the exhaled breath exits the device through the exhalation valve mounted in the mask. When using a spacer without a facemask, the patient must inhale through their mouth and exhale through their nose.
