The National Scholastic SurfingAssociation N.S.S.A. is a surfingassociation in the United States. It is the highest level for competitive amateur surfing in the country. Founded in 1978 by Chuck Allen, John Rothrock and Tom Gibbons, the association was formed with the purpose of uniting amateur surfers from around the country under one competitive association. Since much of the membership consists of students, one of the prerequisites in joining the association is the maintenance of good grades. The NSSA is divided into nine conferences nation wide. The Hawaii conference covers the island chain of Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. The Southwest conference, Gold Coast conference, Northwest Conference and the NSSA Junior novice program are based in California. The east coast is represented by the Northeast, Southeast, Southeast North and Florida Gulf conferences. Although it has a special emphasis on student surfers, the NSSA membership is open to anyone who wants to surf competitively as an amateur. Many well known surfers have competed in the association before turning professional. These include Kelly Slater , Andy Irons , Kalani Robb, Cheyne Magnusson and Bobby Martinez who is the male with the most NSSA titles 7 . The Association of Chess Professionals ACP is a not for profit organisation, the closest thing in existence to a trade union for professional chess players. According to Article 2 of its terms The association s purpose is the protection of professional chess players rights, the practice and promotion of chess worldwide, in particular through the organisation of chess tournaments and other chess events. History As of March 2005, the ACP s President is French International Grandmaster Grandmaster Jo l Lautier . Its secretary is Bart omiej Macieja , its Treasurer Almira Skripchenko , and its Deputy Treasurer Pavel Tregubov . Also on the ACP board are Igor Glek , Anna Hahn chess player Anna Hahn , Vladimir Kramnik , Peter Heine Nielsen and Yannick Pelletier . It was established on 10 October 1991, as an important resolution of the First National Convention of Singapore Malay Muslim Professionals which was held on 6 and 7 October 1990. The Convention was attended by 500 Malay Muslim professionals who met to brainstorm new directions for the community. AMP was formed with core programmes in education, human resource development, social development and research. AMP is a registered charitable organisation and is accorded the status of an Institution of Public Character.
