    Unreferenced date April 2010 The Association of American Colleges and Universities AAC&U is a national association that is committed to improving undergraduate education and advancing liberal education as the preferred philosophy of education for all students. AAC&U was founded in 1915 by college presidents, and it now has more than 1,150 members colleges and universities of all types large and small, public and private, two year and four year. The mission of the Association of American Colleges and Universities is to make the aims of liberal learning a vigorous and constant influence on institutional purpose and educational practice in higher education. In pursuit of that mission it works to create links between presidents, administrators, and faculty who are involved in institutional and curricular planning. AAC&U organizes its work around five broad goals 1 a guiding vision for liberal education, 2 inclusive excellence, 3 intentional and integrative learning, 4 civic, diversity, and global engagement, and 5 authentic evidence. AAC&U publishes several journals, including Liberal Education , Peer Review, On Campus with Women, and Diversity and Democracy. AAC&U sponsors many meetings and institutes for campus teams and publishes reports and monographs. Its most recent publication is College Learning for the New Global Century. History In 1912, the University of London took the initiative to assemble 53 representatives of universities in London to hold a Congress of Universities of the Empire.     The North West Universities Association is a representative body in the North West of England , intended to advance the development of the fifteen higher education establishments. Role The primary aim of the NWUA is to act as an organisation through which the universities of the North West can identify common goals, and thus move forward together through collaborative action, thereby maximising their contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of the North West of England and managing to develop partnerships with business, industry and public bodies in this process. A more general aim of the NWUA is to attempt to foster better overall relations between the institutions of the North West, and establish a lasting relationship. NWUA also runs the Leonardo da Vinci programme, the European Commission s vocational training programme which aims to facilitate student and staff mobility throughout Europe. The programme provides funding for students to undertake a work placement related to their academic study in another European country and for staff to visit European institutions and companies to exchange knowledge and develop vocational training. The NWUA is affiliated with the UK Government, the North West Regional Assembly , the North West Regional Development Agency , the Chamber of Commerce , Confederation of British Industry CBI , the North West Science Council , and other organisations, who assist in promoting the collective ambitions of the establishments.
