The term is fairly common in Europe , but is little known in the English speaking world , though Digital Humanities also known as Humanities computing is in many cases roughly equivalent. Humanistic informatics departments were generally started in the 1990s when universities rarely taught humanities based approaches to the rapidly developing computerized society. For this reason, the field was quite broadly defined, and included courses in humanities computing, basic introductions to how computers work, historical developments of technology, technology and learning, digital art and literature and digital culture. Today several departments have declared more specialized areas of research, such as digital arts and culture at the University of Bergen , and socio cultural communication with and without technology at the University of Aalborg . Digital Humanities is a primary topic, and there are several universities in the US and the UK that have Digital Arts and Humanities research and development centers. One aspect of Digital Humanities that will grow will be the intersection of new digital media and the humanities, particularly in the gaming industry which has developed both casual and serious gaming and game design strategies to foster learning in the humanities and all other academic disciplines. Concepts of spirituality, intuition, and metaphysics are not pursued because they are unfalsifiable, and therefore can never progress beyond personal opinion. Naturalists accept the need for adaption to current change, however it may be, and also that life must feed upon life for survival. But they recognize as well, the necessity for a fair exchange of resources between all species. Industry and technology are sometimes regarded as enemies to naturalism but it is not always the case. For the ones who do believe that, the thought is that the majority of human history, societies were largely agricultural and hunter gatherer and lived in relative harmony and balance with nature. It is developing the SCAMP Specialized Compact Automated Manual deminer replacement Platform. This technology uses remote robotics as a platform for surveying, clearing and checking the quality of clearance in minefield s, while solving a number of issues not addressed by landmine clearing technologies. History The company was started in 2005 by two students Samuel Reeves, an undergraduate business student at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton and Joshua Koplin, a graduate design student at the Pratt Institute . After receiving a grant from a foundation in Geneva, the two partners conducted research in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Thailand and Canada to better understand the landmine clearing technologies in use. Upon their return, they looked for an alternative solution to landmine clearance. Issues that were identified in current landmine clearing machines were high cost reducing the volume of machines that can be financed , weight transportation costs and damage caused to rural infrastructure , and ease of use. After creating a design that purportedly accounted for all of these problems, they decided to create Humanistic Robotics Inc. Its land mine clearing robot is approaching the final test phase, and the company will be looking to produce their new robot en masse within the next few years.
