Oil and gas Oil and gas exploration in the Red Sea off Eritrea began in the 1930s. Following independence, the country began awarding production contracts in 1995. However, as of January 2003, Eritrea had no proven reserves of crude oil or natural gas. It also has no known reserves of coal . As a result, the country, as of 2001, has had no output of oil, natural gas or coal. Petroleum imports and consumption were estimated each at convert 4590 oilbbl d in 2002. In 1997, due to high costs, Eritrea and Ethiopia agreed to shut down their joint operations at the petroleum refinery at Assab and import refined petroleum products. The refinery had a capacity of convert 18000 oilbbl d . In 2000 an estimated convert 3.2 to 3.3 Moilbbl d of oil were shipped through the Bab el Mandeb , a narrow waterway between Eritrea, Yemen , and Djibouti that connects the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea. Electricity As of August 2003, about 80 of the population was without electricity, which was available only in the larger cities and towns, although the government was constructing additional electrical distribution lines. In 2002, net electricity generation was 243 GWh, of which 100 came from fossil fuel s. In the same year, consumption of electricity totaled 226 GWh. Location and description The ecoregion consists of a coastal strip in Eritrea s Southern Red Sea Region continuing to along the Red Sea coast to Obock in Djibouti. Flora The flora of the coastal strip consists of herbs and grasses suited to the dry climate such as Aerva javanica , Cymbopogon schoenanthus , Panicum turgidum , and Lasiurus scindicus , along with some Umbrella thorn Acacia tortilis and Acacia asak trees and Rhigozum somalense and Caesalpinia erianthera shrubs. Fauna This is one of the busiest Bird of prey raptor migration routes in the world as birds such as buzzards and eagles make their way to Africa for the winter along the Red Sea coast and across the Bab el Mandeb strait. Image Map of Hoare Laval Pact.jpg thumb right 300px The proposed division of Abyssinia Ethiopia under the pact The Hoare Laval Pact was a December 1935 proposal by United Kingdom British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Foreign Secretary Samuel Hoare, 1st Viscount Templewood Samuel Hoare and France French Prime Minister of France Prime Minister Pierre Laval for ending the Second Italo Abyssinian War . Italy had wanted to take Abyssinia as part of its empire, and have an empire like the Romans had, and also to avenge previous defeats in the region. The Pact offered to partition Abyssinia as Ethiopia was then called , and thus achieve Italy Italian dictator Benito Mussolini s goal of making the independent nation of Abyssinia into an Italian colony. Under the pact, Italy would gain the best parts of Ogaden and Tigray Province Tigray , and economic influence over all the southern part of Abyssinia. Abyssinia would have a guaranteed corridor to the sea but a poor one, called a corridor for camels at the port of Assab . Mussolini was ready to agree to this, but he waited some days to make his opinion public. Meanwhile, the plan was leaked by a French newspaper on 13 December 1935, and denounced as a sell out of the Abyssinians. The British government disassociated itself from the Pact, and both Hoare and Laval were forced to resign. At that moment, both Britain and France were eager to have Italy rejoin the Stresa Front against Adolf Hitler s ambitions. Moreover, Mussolini wanted to end the Abyssinian war, due to the poor performance of his general, Marshall Emilio De Bono , and unexpectedly hard Abyssinian resistance. Historians have differed over the significance of the pact. A. J. P.
