When a potential predator encounters the AshBorer, it may refrain from conflict mistakenly thinking that it may be stung. Thus the AshBorer benefits from the similarity of its appearance to a more dangerous foe, making it a Batesian mimic of the wasp. The AshBorer is distinguished from the wasp in that it is somewhat larger, growing to a length of to 1   inches, is amber colored in addition to black and yellow, and lacks a stinger. Significance AshBorer larva e feed on European Ash Fraxinus excelsior , lilac , privet and Fraxinus texensis mountain ash . The individual borer is a hollow tube, tapered at the edge, generally with some kind of handle at the other end. A separate device is a cork borer sharpener used to hone the cutting edge to more easily slice the cork. Cork borers are also used to take samples from living trees, for tree ring analysis, and for taking samples for experiments when a constant diameter is required, e.g. When testing the water potential of a potato, a cork borer is used to maintain a constant surface area. The auger bit is usually manufactured from carbide steel. It is most often used by forester s, researcher s, and scientist s to determine the age of a tree. This science is also called dendrochronology . This enables the user to count the rings in the core sample to determine the age of the tree or the growth rate of the tree. After use the tool breaks down and the auger bit and extractor fit into the handle. This makes it highly compact and easy to carry. Use File Pressler drill 5 beentree.jpg right thumb 300px An extracted core sample Effective use of an increment borer requires specialized training. Samples are taken at breast height or stump height of the tree depending on the user s objectives. During use the borer should be well lubricated this makes the auger bit easier to use and helps to prevent the increment borer from becoming stuck in the tree. Maintenance Increment borers should be properly maintained to keep them in good working condition. They should be cleaned after use and dried before storing. Sharpening kits are also available and should be used when the auger bits become dull. A raise borer is a machine used in underground mining , to excavate a circular hole between two levels of a mining mine without the use of explosives . The raise borer is set up on the upper level of the two levels to be connected, on an evenly laid platform typically a concrete pad . A small diameter hole pilot hole is drilled to the level required the diameter of this hole is typically 230mm 350mm 9 15 , large enough to accommodate the drill string . Once the drill has broken into the opening on the target level, the bit is removed and a reamer head, of the required diameter of the excavation, is attached to the drill string and raised back towards the machine. The drill cuttings from the reamer head fall to the floor of the lower level. The finished raise has smooth walls and may not require rock bolt ing or other forms of ground support. ref cite book last Puhakka first Tulla authorlink coauthors title Underground Drilling and Loading Handbook publisher Tamrock Corporation date 1997 location Finland pages 186 187 url doi id isbn ref The boxhole borer or machine roger is a variant of a raise borer that is used when there is not enough space on the higher of the two levels to be connected. The instep borer was a medieval Germany German instrument of torture that externally resembled an iron boot. It was hinged to permit the free insertion and removal of the bare foot. A crank projected from a housing over the instep, which concealed a long, thick, serrated iron blade, grooved so as to inflict maximum damage and promote liberal blood flow. Turning the crank slowly advanced the blade into the boot, punching a hole through the center of the instep. The resultant wound was so large that it was not unusual for the prisoner to die of toxaemia soon after. It seems that the instep borer was used only in Nuremberg . The jig borer is a type of machine tool invented at the end of World War I to make possible the quick yet very precise location of hole centers. It was invented independently in the United States and Switzerland. ref Moltrecht, Karl Hans Machine Shop Practice , 2nd ed. New York Industrial Press, 1981, Volume 1, p. 403. ref It can be viewed as a specialized species of boring mill or milling machine that provided tool and die maker s with a higher degree of positioning precision repeatability and accuracy than those general machines had previously provided. A typical jig borer had a work table of around 400 x 200 mm, which can be moved using large handwheels with micrometer style readouts and verniers on particularly carefully made shafts with a strong degree of gearing this allowed positions to be set on the two axes to an accuracy of 0.0001 inch 2.5 micrometres . It was generally used to enlarge to a precise size smaller holes drilled with less accurate machinery in approximately the correct place IE with the small hole strictly within the area to be bored out for the large hole . History Before the jig borer was developed, hole center location had been accomplished either with Marking out layout either quickly but imprecisely or painstakingly and precisely or with Jig tool Drill jig drill jig s themselves made with painstaking and precise layout . The moth is often mistaken for a bee or wasp because of its movements, and the bright orange hindleg scales. The females typically lay their eggs at the base of leaf stalks, and the caterpillars develop and feed inside the stalk, eventually killing the leaf. They soon migrate to the main stem, and with enough feeding damage to the stem, the entire plant may die. Habitat The squash vine borer lives in most temperate North America n states, except the Pacific coast . Southern states have two broods a year of the borer. Control Pesticides are ineffective after the larvae are inside the plant. Gardeners find this a difficult pest to combat. Some try to avoid the pest by timing the production season to harvest before the pests can build up, or after they have peaked. Prevention includes pesticides to kill the adult moth such use must not contaminate the flowers, as pollinator s would be killed by poisoned nectar or pollen . Organic controls include wrapping the lower stem with nylon ... too much damage. Others use a stiff wire, a needle, or a toothpick to kill the borer without too ... symptom of infestation. Image iceborer.jpg thumb right Hotheaded Naked Ice Borer The Hotheaded Naked Ice Borer is a fictional animal invented by Discover magazine Discover magazine as an April Fool s Day joke. A short article on the Hotheaded Naked Ice Borer first appeared in the April, 1995 issue of Discover magazine Discover magazine. The article was written by Tim Folger , then an editor at the magazine. Folger wrote several other April Fool stories for the magazine, including one about the discovery of prehistoric musical instruments bagpipes, a mastodon tusk tuba, and a bone triangle supposedly used by Neanderthals . Hoax The article carried a purported photo of a Pinniped seal like creature with a bony growth protruding from its head. A deputy art director created the bony growth by manipulating an image of a trilobite . According to the article, this animal had recently been discovered in Antarctica . The bony structure was suffused with tiny blood vessel s that would heat it to a temperature high enough to melt through the ice. To acquire food, a group of these animals would burrow into the ice underneath suitable prey, and use their heads to melt through. When the animal, usually a penguin , sank helplessly into the water, the group of Borers would devour it. It was even speculated in the article that Antarctic explorer Philippe Poisson poisson d avril , April fish, is the French equivalent of April fool may have been eaten by a group of these animals when he disappeared in 1837. A clue that indicated that the Ice Borer story was a hoax can be found in the name of the biologist who discovered the animal, Aprile Pazzo April Fool in Italian . Secondly, for those familiar with the creature, the picture to the right is clearly a manipulated image of a Naked Mole Rat , a curious burrowing rodent from Africa.
