  1. Ascending and Descending

Artwork image file Ascending and Descending.jpg image size 275px title Ascending and Descending artist M. C. Escher year 1960 type Lithography lithograph height 35.5 width 28.5 Italic title Ascending and Descending is a Lithography lithograph print by the Netherlands Dutch artist M. C. Escher which was first printed in March 1960. The original print measures 14 x 11 1 4 . The lithograph depicts a large building roofed by a never ending staircase . Two lines of identically dressed men appear on the staircase, one line ascending whilst the other descends. Two figures sit apart from the people on the endless staircase one in a secluded courtyard, the other on a lower set of stairs. While most two dimensional artists use relative proportions to create an illusion of depth, Escher here and elsewhere uses conflicting proportions to create the visual paradox. Ascending and Descending was influenced by, and is an artistic implementation of, the Penrose stairs , an impossible object Lionel Penrose had first published his concept in the February, 1958 issue of the British Journal of Psychology . Escher developed the theme further in his print Waterfall M. C. Escher Waterfall , which appeared in 1961. The two concentric processions on the stairs use enough people to emphasise the lack of vertical rise and fall. In addition, the shortness of the tunics worn by the people makes it clear that some are stepping up and some are stepping down. The structure is embedded in human activity. By showing an unaccountable ritual of what Escher calls an unknown sect, Escher has added an air of mystery to the people who ascend and descend the stairs. Therefore, the stairs themselves tend to become incorporated into that mysterious appearance. There are free people and Escher said of these recalcitrant individuals refuse, for the time being, to take part in the exercise of treading the stairs. They have ... 0 8109 6720 0. M. C. 1. Ascending and descending (diving)

refimprove date January 2010 In Scuba diving diving , ascending and descending is done using strict protocols to avoid problems caused by the changes in ambient pressure and the hazards of obstacles near the surface or collision with vessels. Diver training organizations place importance on these protocols early in their diver training programmes. ref name saa45 Controlled ascent When not ascending along a shot line or anchor line, the following steps should be taken when ascending in open water Before commencing the ascent manoeuvre, the Delayed surface marker buoy signal buoy is released and inflated to notify any vessel in the vicinity of the ascent. The accompanying diver buddy is given the ascension signal thumb up The Buoyancy compensator diving buoyancy compensator device BCD is set to neutral, inflater hose is pointed upwards and both divers slowly begin to swim up. The BCD is slowly filled with air using the inflater hose. Care is taken not to fill the BCD too rapidly, as the air will expand because of the reduced water pressure , increasing the buoyancy of the BCD. The divers keep looking up to avoid any obstacles. Using the inflater hose to release air, the ascension speed is kept below 10 meters per minute. An ascent meter or dive computer may be used to help judge this speed. A decompression stop safety stop of 1 3 minutes is made at 3 6 meters from the water surface. After the stop, the last part of the ascension is done very slowly at no more than 5 meters per minute . The divers keep looking around and listen closely for any possible marine vessel vessel s. When above the surface, the BCD is inflated and a signal is made, if a safety boat is waiting. Controlled descent When not descending along a shot line or anchor line, the following steps are performed The divers swim towards the point of descent and meet up with the companion diver buddy . The Dive signal OK signal is given. The snorkel is removed and the second stage of the regulator is placed in the mouth ...   more details

  1. The Lark Ascending

The Lark Ascending is a work by the English people English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams , inspired by George Meredith s 122 line poem of the same name about the skylark . The work was written in two versions violin and piano , written in 1914 and violin and orchestra , written in 1920. The orchestral version is the one that is almost always heard now. It is one of the most popular pieces in the Classical repertoire among British listeners. Vaughan Williams sketched the work while watching troop ships cross the English Channel at the outbreak of the World War I First World War . A small boy observed him making the sketches and, thinking he was jotting down a secret code, informed a police officer, who subsequently arrested the composer. The ascending chain condition ACC and descending chain condition DCC are finiteness properties satisfied by some algebraic structures, most importantly, Ideal ring theory ideal s in certain commutative ring s. ref Hazewinkel, Gubareni & Kirichenko 2004 , p.6, Prop. 1.1.4. ref ref Fraleigh & Katz 1967 , p. 366, Lemma 7.1 ref ref Jacobson 2009 , p. 142 and 147 ref These conditions played an important role in the development of the structure theory of commutative rings in the works of David Hilbert , Emmy Noether , and Emil Artin . The conditions themselves can be stated in an abstract form, so that they make sense for any partially ordered set . This point of view is useful in abstract algebraic dimension theory due to Gabriel and Rentschler. However, this distinction is not as important physiologically as in the ascending limb, so often the two are treated as one structure. The thick descending limb is less important than the thin descending limb, so often the terms descending limb and thin descending limb are used interchangeably.
