The Society of Women Artists is a British art body dedicated to promoting art by women. History The Society was founded in 1855 as the Society of Female Artists and held its first exhibition two years later. The Society has since held an annual exhibition in London of work by women artists. In the mid nineteenth century, women were not considered as serious artists and had great difficulty in obtaining public showings. At the Society s first exhibition, 149 women showed 358 works, some concealing their true identities for fear of social recrimination. The Society was involved in education for women artists, who were effectively excluded from professional training by the mores of the time. In 1869 there was a name change to the Society of Lady Artists . In 1899 the present name was adopted, The Society of Women Artists. The Society has had many distinguished women artists among its members and a complete listing of exhibitors from 1855 to 1996 has been published in a four volume dictionary collated from old catalogues. ref Charles Baile De Laperriere, Society of Women Artists Exhibitors, 1855 1996 A Dictionary of Artists and Their Work in the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Women Artists . Early members of the Society included nationally renownded arstists, including California impressionists Alson S. Clark and Marion Wachtel , and the noted adherent of the Arts and Crafts movement Ernest A. The Society of American Artists was an American artists group. It was formed in 1877 by artists who felt the National Academy of Design did not adequately meet their needs, and was too conservative. The group began meeting in 1874 at the home of Richard Watson Gilder and his wife Helena de Kay Gilder . In 1877 they formed the Society, and subsequently held annual art exhibitions. Some of the first members included sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens , whose work had been rejected from a National Academy exhibition in 1877 painters Walter Shirlaw , Robert Swain Gifford , Albert Pinkham Ryder , John LaFarge , Julian Alden Weir , John Henry Twachtman , and Alexander Helwig Wyant and designer and artist Louis Comfort Tiffany . Eventually most of the best known artists of the day joined the group, and many held dual membership with the National Academy. The cycle of conservative to progressive repeated in 1897 when the Ten American Painters group broke away from the Society of American Artists. The Society ultimately merged with the National Academy in 1906. The Glasgow Society of Lady Artists was founded in 1882 by eight female students of the Glasgow School of Art with the aim of according due recognition to women in the field of art. The eight founding members were successful business women, active in many enterprises, and by 1895 had accumulated sufficient funds to allow the purchase of a house at No. 5 Blythswood Square. It had the distinction of being the first Women Artists Residential Club in Great Britain and was known as The Glasgow Society of Lady Artists Club . By 1897 the partnership of George Henry Walton and Fred Rowntree had designed and constructed a gallery for the Club s fourteenth Annual Exhibition. A disastrous fire on 27 May 1901 destroyed the Gallery and pictures for a special Summer Exhibition mounted in conjunction with the International Exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum . The Gallery was rebuilt to the design of George Henry Walton and the first exhibition was held on 25 October 1902. In 1907 a Decoration Committee commissioned Charles Rennie Mackintosh to carry out certain interior work and the striking black pedimented neo classical front door. The Club thrived over the following 64 years until 1971 when it was sold to the Scottish Arts Council . Some members were determined to revive the Society , which duly happened in 1975 when it was renamed The Glasgow Society of Women Artists with a Centenary Exhibition being held in the Collins Gallery ref http www.strath.ac.uk collinsgallery ref in 1982. ref http www.gswa.org.uk history.htm ref ref http www.armin grewe.com crm crm blythswood.htm ref References reflist Category Art societies Category Organisations based in Glasgow Category Glasgow School of Art Category 1882 in Scotland Category 1882 establishments Category Arts organisations based in Scotland Category Culture in Glasgow ... more details
